sceneOS

category: general [glöplog]
let's make a sceneOS.
i heard there were lots of argueing about this. but i think we should give it a try.
like the os boots from a live cd, and voila. the perfect os for demos. we could even write emulators for all the other operating systems.
anywayz. what do you think? :D

will it have rotozooming windows and hypnoglow buttons? YES! otherwise, BASS!

is there something done?
or they gave up while planning?

"we could even write emulators for all the other operating systems" <- good luck! :D

i think there was some very preliminary code done, not sure.. would need to find the site again, if its still online somewhere, if there ever was one.. i clearly remember reading ppl discussing it, but never actually cared much about the whole project.

yes what a friggin' cool idea
-the taskbar could indicate how many beers are left in the fridge, just like a loader bar on 64k's but the other way round
-obviously the standard colorscheme should be "dutch"
-it should also automatically rephotoshop all images and video of females with random faces from the slengpung database
-the online help should contain nothing but BASS
-we'll add a smell-u-mulator with extra stale-beer-and--week-old-pizza-odor
can't wait to boot it for the first time...

i think it should have a samantha fox slideshow while loading.

yes! brilliant! actually i think it would be even better to have a samantha fox slideshow *all the time*- imagine that! perhaps we can make a multimonitor setup mandatory for this purpose?

it's a great idea! form a company, hire 1000 coders and see what happens.
I really love this kind of insight in os development. Good luck, keeps us informed of the progress! :)

i dont see any point to make smth for a system that the scene itself defines. there's no challenge in that. sceners should exploit industry-given platforms to challenge not only eachother, but the industry.

the hardware would stay the same anyway...

Well, there is a devellopment, but not inside the demo scene itself (I think): http://www.menuetos.org/. There is one killer factor, why windows established to _the_ demo platform: It's the widest used operating system and people are able to watch demos/intros while doing other stuff. No needs for reboots, no needs to save all the work first and close all apps, ...
A selfbooting demo (nothing other is what you plan) may sound cool but won't be seen that often as a normal demo - because it is a break within the workflow.
Madenmann is right.
Would be better to write a Demo Runtime Environment, which would allow to run demos on linux or windoz or whatever the same way with some limitations. A bit like the Java environment or Flash does...

Make it C64 compliant might be a bit hard thou...

But anyway, removing hardware limitations would be a pain for many coders...

That's only a bad dream...

Use Flash or make real Demos!

sampi: you go code that os. as soon as you've got support for my gf4go 420, my built in soundcard, my touchpad, intel speedstep and my wierd blinking buttons on the top, i promise i'll try it. if it fits on a floppy.

kusma is right. YOU make it.

menutos looks promising. sadly my laptop doesn't have a floppy drive, so can't really try it :(
