Anyway, I give up — this whole thread is a painful reminder of why I stopped coming to Pouet in the first place. My days are far better without random, endless drama that stems from simple questions and attempts at constructive feedback, so keep the 18 years old screenshot resolutions and go about your business. :)

640x480 would be a good compromise specifically because it covers ~99.5% of indexed-color palettized screen modes you'd want to add, making it unnecessary to scale them. Scaling those usually involves an RGB conversion and increases their file size. A couple blank rows in the prod page doesn't spoil the layout IMHO.

Stuff that outputs in higher res is almost always RGB so it doesn't matter if it needs to be scaled.

And if you allowed up to 640x512 you would instantly make it more Amiga (as in 1985, which is 33 years ago).

i'm willing to bet that many users will feel the necessity to doublepixel 320 screenshots for the sake of extra real estate, that's slightly over 0.5% of the archive ;)

bigger screenshots could be a small part of a complete - and imho much needed - UX refurbishing. but you all can imagine how well this change (or ANY change) would go within this community.. :DDD better leave everything this way i guess

Most platforms to feature on Pouet are 320x200/256 or even less, and only a few are the maximum of 1080p or greater. I think that 400x300 or whatever it is at the moment is absolutely fine as a one-size fits all, even though back when the size was being chosen there were probably NO 720p/1080p demos.

It's not so much the size of the pictures but the number of them for each prod: one picture to represent an entire prod is really not enough, and whilst animated GIFs solve that problem for a lot of Amiga prods, an equivalent is needed for Windows and other modern platforms, and NOT many smaller pictures in one big picture, neither.

Also, I've seen many prods here where the current screenshots are smaller even than 400x300. Perhaps if each platform had a standard size for the screenshots (also accounting for widescreen-capable platforms) then submissions could be accepted at ANY size and RESAMPLED to those standard sizes?

Lastly, if I look at a prod page and the screenshot doesn't quite give me enough information, then there's always the YouTube link, which will show me everything, or at least a whole lot more.

so LJ and i laughed about this thread and instead of writing even more nonsense, we wrote a browser extension/add on:

when visiting a prod page and if a demozoo id is set for the current prod, it displays a nice demozoo screenshot (if exist)
you can click to cycle through all screenshots.

I think someone should write a tool to fetch the screenshots from demozoo. Just an idea.

Please don't. By the nature of the site the author should have (and de facto has) the authority on what the screenshot for their productions is.

the "plugin" is just ~20 lines of javascript code, which could just copy pasted to work on pouet directly in ~5 minutes.

just think of it as a proof of concept or testbed

400x300 never bothered me at all to be honest.

To me, the screenshot on Pouet is a sneak peek, a preview, a way to recognize the prod, something that will give me an idea of what it's all about.

I no more create prod exceeding 400x300 so I don't care either.

why not just embed the youtube vid instead of a screenshot (in case the youtube link is added)?
