Revision 2018 - 30. March to 2. April - Saarbrücken, Germany
category: parties [glöplog]
@lesnik
Yeah german is fun. When we were young and visited russia one or two times a year we taught them that the german word for Cheers is "Schluck du Luder!". It was very nice after a few years the girls always boozed with us, using what they learned from the past. It was a blast! ;)

Ok, so now I should check with the dictionary everything I've learned. Just in case :)
Hell yeah, once again a great party!
Mostly, what has already been said. Here are a few personal additions:
I was particularly struck this year by the realization that apparently the scene showed more originality and artistic inventiveness than during some of the past years.
It is nice to see that the scene is not completely stuck in its always repeating, self referential echo chamber (no pun intended. or maybe pun intended). To be more precise, I observed:
- continuing professionalization
- increasing and successful outreach (twitch anyone?)
- diversification of artistic themes
- showcasing that the scene still has a technological edge here and there, bam!
So, cool to see the scene evolving while staying true to its values, or at least iterating on those values, while neither being all too conservative or becoming too arbitrary in its output.
So, this was the 18th year I attended an Easter party, and I can't stress enough how much I enjoy the scene from a social point of view. The friendly and welcoming "family-like" spirit is very unique and something to be treasured a lot, especially in contrast to what appears to be going on elsewhere in the world.
Once more it was great getting to know sceners I didn't know yet, sitting at the bonfire late at night talking about all kinds of interesting stuff, overdoing it with the partying until the point where "i can't even", but still feeling truly safe and accepted and not regretting a thing.
Huge thanks to all the orgas for making this kind of experience possible! <3
@Starchaser: thanks a lot for those, they'll get a special spot in my Meteorik display cabinet :D

A minor point of criticism: The logicoma set, while being extremely awesome, was far too loud. (kb, take it easy on the faders!). In the last row, my noise canceling headphones clipped trying to work against that, which is a reliable indicator for "too loud". Sadly this prevented me from joining the dancing crowd.
@vscd У вас есть сообщение. Schluck du Luder!
As for the party... I didn't expect any superexceptional atmosphere tbh. It's a huge, crowdy event after all and probably this friendly atmosphere is specific rather for smaller events...
Pff, bullshit! I was wrong. Despite the size of the event, it was supernice, friendly and sometimes even quite cozy - many places where you can hide and talk with friends + barbecue, campfire, a lot of time spent outside... Maybe it's because of the weather, which was great, or maybe I was just lucky (many people said that it was a unique edition in terms of atmosphere). Nevermind, I'm glad that I could be there. Thanks to all orgas (especially for Havoc for his hospitality, "easygoingness" and assistance), respect.

3. qualification via other parties is in the works
How would that work? Does it mean it will become impossible to participate to Revision's compo without attending another party? Because if that's the case, that would be a huge bummer.
Zavie: I guess the idea is more that these people then would not need to qualify at revision anymore but are "set" for the next round since they already qualified at another party. this makes it possible for even more people to take part because the qualification round at revision is sped up. That doesn't mean that there won't be a way to qualify at revision, rather the opposite, because it's easier to get a spot in the qualification rounds. (This year more people wanted to compete than there was places in the qualification)
Speaking of which, didn't okkie (?) announce that there would be some sort of extra shader showdown because so many people applied? What happened to that?

It got cut due to delays.

Cool, sounds good.
Disclaimer: My aforementioned post only reflects how I got the concept. Havoc is the organizer of it, and is currently working out the final details. Thank you Havoc for dedicating your time, hard work and passion in the organization of the live-coding events and bringing the concept to the next level. <3
For someone who had to enjoy the party over twitch it was amazing. We took to the stream with us wherever we went, to friends and family. Plenty of kids got hooked as they watched the shader showdowns :)
Thanks to all organizers and the twitch / stream team for all your hard work.
Does anyone know if and where the cone tracing seminar is available to see?

Here's an idea (from Solskogen): create a decent default shader that already has a basic raymarching loop (i.e. what the first 5-10 minutes are spent on anyway) and cut the round time in half.

If you want to make sure that you get nothing but raymarched cauliflower, that's an awesome idea. It would put everyone at a disadvantage who wants to do something other than that specific flavor of raymarching.

Seminars should be available from Revision's YouTube channel soon. Just give the organizers some time to actually edit and process the videos if they're not there yet.

We already discussed that idea multiple times didn't we? I'm still against providing a default ray marching loop not so much because I put mine down in less than 30 seconds but it being harder to work with someone elses code, also this effectively entices using raymarching which imho is a bad thing, we've seen quite a few unique (and winning) effects that did not use raymarching. Another point is that if you're not able to put down your marching loop in a reasonable amount of time you'll also have a hard time defining interesting geometry out of nowhere.
I think more important would be to make sure FFT inputs are reliable, only save the shader file after it successfully rendered a frame, have very basic indentation level preservation and have DJs playing halfway decent music...

steltek is busy cutting and uploading the last compos and seminars - during the party we're on the same network as all visitors and the 4 streams were making it hard to upload to youtube while the party's running; afterwards, we're all busy with the teardown; with a bit of patience, the cone tracing seminar should be available soon.

Out of curiousity, when did "table reservations" start being a thing? They used to be explicitly banned a few years ago.
IIRC they still are and I make it a point to remove such signs whenever I spot them. I can recommend to everyone to just ignore them.
It's also a matter of scale to me. If someone asks you to leave that one seat free for his groupmate who'll arrive in 30min, who am I to fuss? If the first thing you do upon arrival is paste half the row with "reserved for <huge-ass group>" signs, then very nope.
Also my two cent about the shader showdown: I found some results weird too, until I realized that due to its live nature and audience involvement it's not just a purely technical standoff, but effectively also a popularity contest. Once I accepted that this is what the showdown is about, i felt better about the results as well, and I think it is important to be aware as a contestant that you're entering a mixed tech battle / popularity contest.

Popularity contest.. I'm very reluctant about calling it that.
However, it is about the performance as well as the final product. Some are better than others at showing previews during the match, teasing the audience and playing along with the show.
Speaking of
I remember this one moment during the showdown where the editor seemingly froze and was wondering... does it create regular backups? In the rare occasion that it would fully crash, that would prevent having to redo the whole round.

@lug00ber: you know its not exactly helpful in finding flow, especially in the first round, I may only speak for myself here though. That being said, no hard feelings just a "wtf guys?!" :)
About the popularity contest, unfortunately yes, we all know who got the louder cheering going for them in the final, but we also know that the actual decision was fair, still I'm a bit disappointed about the crowd reaction there.

Yeah I remember it too because it happened to me ;) The tool actually crashed, two times, which unfortunately is not visible to the audience(due to the image signal being delivered by the tool itself, not the OS/some 3rd party tool), a point that I already criticized last year...

THAT. =/
Apart from that it was a very smooth experience and thanks to everyone who took part in the competitions which have been one of the most entertaining ones =)
