We made a demo-ish video clip

category: general [glöplog]

Hello! We used our [Poo-Brain's] 64k demo tools to create a video clip recently :)

While not technically a prod, more of a wild, it's almost all done with a raymarcher (with external heightmap support).

I'm shamelessly plugging it here, but secretly hope you guys'll be interested!

Watch the result here!

great stuff :D

Nice! Would it work in realtime?

Hah - saw the video a few days ago (following nfg) and instantly thought demoish video - didn’t pay attention to the end screen, but now it all makes sense.
Great job!

It looks like a really well polished demo, the direction, post processing and glow is spot on while not overshooting.

The only thing that bugs me a bit is the model of the spaceship-thingy: it looks "too 64k", means its shape seems too low-poly/generated for a non-realtime release. It doesnt look bad or anything but a more complex model would take away a lot of the intro-ish look of it (which may not even be desired and probably only applies to people who watch a lot of intros aynway).

The track is a banger, I guess I have to look into Pythius a bit.

Really nice work, I hope the video (and the music) gets some recognition out there in the wilds =)

It also faintly reminded me of this Noisia video :D

I liked the end scene, really gave me a sense of huge scale for a few seconds. The neon hypnoglow is way over the top in the tunnel scenes but the interesting geometry and variations distract from that thankfully.

Would love to see this in realtime! Amazing work, as always! I'm shouting out loud for more!

This could easily work in any wild compo, methinks.

Also, most of the time it does not look as it was that complex. I'm assuming if it's rendered for a video, it has a ridiculous amount of supersampling and raycast steps, but how far from realtime would it be if it was toned down a bit?

Yooo, thanks for the great response :) Really cool to hear!

I totally neglected to credit the awesome heightmaps I used by Ixion, so let's rectifty that here! Huge shoutouts and apologies.

@yzi
Most scenes run at 20-30 FPS at SD, though the closer the deadline the less I cared for that, though while working it was definitely a big thing for me to have good immedaite feedback of camera changes so preserving realtime playback was a huge help! The particles flying off the sun however ended up as a distance function with for loop with procedural perlin noise, super slow!

@Bobic
I guess the above kinda motivates why that's probably not going to happen :) I think I could strip some content and simplify some things to make it happen, but then I'd have to modify my 64k code to support textures and whatnot, and with Revision coming up I'm just a bit busy to try that out, sorry! Because I fully agree!

@Trilkk
It's a video because we wanted to deliver a video clip for that new tune :) but I approached it 100% as a demo, so most of it is (near) real-time procedural raymarched scenes, with the extra heightmap here or there of course.

I heard some people request HI-rez screenshots, which I'm gonna share here and then link I suppose. All I have is raw output from the toolset so without the final colour grading & great after effects work by Lex, but here's a little dump :D
