It goes for everyone, but doubly so for staff.

It's a little late to suggest to short a stock when it's already plunging faster than a base-jumper after a cliff strike.

so GPUs will become affordable again for more important things like the demoscene! hurray!
beats using them for the financial equivalent of herbalife

Why?

When you're so certain about something that you're setting up the lawnchair and megaphone to laugh at people, but you're not certain enough to throw a hundred bucks at it and make guaranteed money? I wonder if you're sure of anything

at least his megaphone doesnt devaluate as fast as bitcoins
🎵The Bubble Song🎵

(on a more serious note: i'm hodling. btc, eth & some alts. most fascinating thing since the internet.)

Maali, I'm asking the nay-sayers why they don't short BTC. Fast devaluation is actually what would benefit them.

I go away for five years, come back and make two calm (if provocative) posts and this? Nice community you're building here.

guybrush, you're asking the nay-sayers, who's core point is that it's stupid to speculate on cryptocurrencies, why they won't speculate on cryptocurrencies.

whether to speculate that stuff goes up or down is entirely besides the point - you appear heavily invested (financially and emotionally) in digital herbalife, and people disagree with you about how smart that is.

(i was replying to your first messages, not defending the "mouthfoamers" comment which IMO has gotten enough attention now)

I don't like laughing at people and I certainly don't recall setting up a megaphone for that purpose. If you're referring to the crypto conference thing a few pages back, I was laughing at the irony, not at the people.

As for the concept of cryptocurrency in itself, it's something that epitomizes a lot of the stuff that I don't like about the tech culture or society in general. I do have to admit that the current cryptocurrency bubble in general is the sort of garbage fire that is fascinating to watch. I do hope that things turn out well for everyone.

I'm certain enough that it will go down in flames. However, I'm not interested in speculating or profiting from it in any way. If I want to make guaranteed money, I'll just invest in vintage Magic cards or something.

Not really, no. If there's something I've learned in my life, it is that you can very rarely be sure of anything.

You can also be sure that something is unsustainable and is going to crash/correct, but in order to short it you need to also be sure of the timing. Markets can stay irrational longer than you can remain solvent.

now... had you bought nvidia stocks at the beginning of the cryptobubble you had 5x your investment back :D

Ah, Mt.Gox references. Sort of dated?

Okay, well, you've answered my question - timing. Thank you! That's the same reason I got from coworkers, they were 100% sure BTC was going to fail, they just "couldn't find an option" to short it for that length of time. For them it was three years _for sure_.

So we all seem to agree that it's going to be successful for a while, at least.

We just have differing opinions on how long that'll be. I just wonder, if anyone has an idea, of what it is that's going to happen two or three years from now that'll sink my BoatCoin that hasn't done it already? People launder money with every type of currency already. Fuck, I've seen it done at a casino where I worked. It's not hard. Governments love and/or hate crypto already - so what's the big surprise that's going to happen? Another Silk Road? Worldwide network censorship? A total post-secrecy era? Aliens? Norklear war? Egan-style singularity?

Well, there was supposed to be a lecture about Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies to be delivered in Vienna next week, but it was cancelled. Probably because Bitcoin has not risen, but rather fallen during the past month and so the hype that existed since fall 2017 is over. However, one is never able to predict the future accurately. Perhaps Bitcoin will rise again and, as some prophets said some time ago, will eventually reach USD 1 million...

Bitcoin turned half of the nerdosphere greedy angry people (Guybrush here is a nice example). This makes me sad.

I've never been very interested in investing and speculation, why would I suddenly be interested now simply because the underlying asset class happens to be digital in nature?

I used to love that all my subcultures were nicely shielded from the greedy alpha-male financial bullshit others would participate in. We'd be making cool shit for fun! Let the neighbour worry about whether stocks are up or down today. Now, for reasons that still puzzle me, half of the people in my nice nerdy subcultures suddenly turned into my neighbour. What the hell?

In all honesty, none of this discussion belongs on Pouet. Wanna discuss stocks? Go to some financial site together with all the other greedy bastards.
