Demoscene School

category: residue [glöplog]
Hi,

If I ever have children, I would like to send them not to a regular school but to a specialized demoscene school where they learn to code, make graphics, compose music, etc.

This is not a totally unrealistic dream. In some countries it might be legally possible to found such a school, which children would be able to attend instead of a regular school.

Any ideas on that?

Adok,

What you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent question were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in on this website is now dumber for having read it.

May God have mercy on your soul.

That would be awesome. Why not make an online demoscene course? I'm sure many of those kind of sites would be happy to offer it

Let's all force our passion onto our children, so they don't do it for fun, but because we tell them to! They'll love it, especially in their rebellious teenager years!

coming up: demo against demos

First we need to establish a political demoscene party.
I mean, what can go wrong? Looking at the political advertisement in this country every demo is 100x times better!
Once we are in parliament or even gov we can make laws to include demoscene history and ethics in school and of course give proper tax money to people who do parties!

back on topic:

demoscene greats discovered demoscene on their own and self-taught themselves in their field of expertise. that's what kept it real (read: underground).

tons of videos/resources are available now for learning coding, musicmaking, pixel gfx... then you decide what you use it for. forcing it on kids is plain dumb (sorry), let them fledge into going after things if they want.

i'd rather send them to a proper school and teach them everything they need to know to not to become the next Adok

It could be a school for age 14 to 19. In Austria there are specialized schools for this age group that focus on electronics. A demoscene school could be a special school of this type. I would propose the following weekly schedule:

English: 4 hours per week
Math: 4 hours per week
Programming: 4 hours per week
Graphics: 4 hours per wek
Music: 4 hours per week
Computer Science: 2 hours per week
Physics: 2 hours per week
History: 2 hours per week

In addition every student chooses one of three "Master classes" which take an additional 4 hours per week - Programming Master Class, Graphics Master Class or Music Master Class.

In the basic courses you learn stuff which you can easily learn even if you have no special talent. In the Master Class you learn the hard stuff, depending on your strengths, that makes you a really great coder / graphician / musician.

It is not too difficult to imagine what would be taught in the individual courses.

then it's not really a school for demoscene. it is a digital media school.

why don't you call it a game developer school then?
why do you want to teach music to practically tone-deaf teenagers who want to program?
why do you want to teach assembly programming to a kid who wants to excel in arts and handdrawn graphics?
are we really running low on polihistors in the demoscene so this is needed?
don't you think the whole point of the demoscene is to remain an underground club of some sort to keep its spirit?
are you sure the hyped overexposure wouldn't damage the demoscene?
are you sure in 10-15 years the biggest problem of demoscene will be a lack of newcomers waving a high school degree to apply for a "job" in an underground hobbyist group?

etc... i think my made my point here. i won't say do a feasibility check on it because its already far off, i'm sorry.

btw. stuff like this already exists, it's called digital media designer dept. in specialized universities.

Adok, didn't you quit the scene? Please, keep your end of the bargain, and save us from this bullshit.

It's impossible to quit the scene!

Failed game developers teach game development so it’s only logical failed demoscener wants to start a demoscene school.
