Revision 2017 - 14th to 17th April - Saarbrücken, Germany

category: parties [glöplog]
Strange enough, "Faster, higher, louder, boom" was the production from the party which I enjoyed the most.

One thing - could somebody in charge please consider to do:

1. Pre-selection in pc demo compo (15 is a top we could handle)
[...]

Please do not preselect the demo compo (at least not when it is the last compo of the party and the compo running time would exceed voting/doors close deadline.
Cmon, watching 26 entries with a break inbetween (which could have been a tiny bit longer tho) is a doable thing. Is this really something to complain about? It didn't even delay anything because it was the final compo. I personally enjoy long demo compos even when it is sometimes hard for me to stay awake without a break.
What's the point of keeping the final compo short? Why do you want to watch a demo compo when you are apparently annoyed of demos and want the compo to be over sooner?
I don't really get it...

I almost forgot to say:

Thanks for the awesome party to all the organizers, everyone who contributed a prod and also to everyone else.
I already feel a bit of post-party-depression kicking in. Which is a quite good indicator for an awesome party.

One thing tho:
Is it really necessary to flash the lights -in- the sleeping area with event/compo starts?
Sometimes people need a bit of sleep (and maybe can't afford a hotel room) and overhearing the loud jingles is hard enough. It's not like you have to wake them up. There is a timetable almost everywhere. If the go sleeping they are (or at least should be) aware of what they are missing; so they are sleeping for a reason. Missing a compo is their fault (or maybe even inevitable due to health reasons sometimes) and you don't have to wake them up for the events like parents who wake their kids for school ;) .
I mean: we are all grown u.... wait... ok, forget that...

Thank you for everything you have done for me, Revision. I don't know what I would do without you.

@RbR - I totally understand the specifics of Easter German party when you just have to go for the toilet run, have a dinner, smoke a ciggy, talk plenty next to the camp fire and then come back when the entry number is over 15 or more to see shadow of quality in the pc demos. It's one of the approaches. One the contrary I've seen plenty of people who just went to sleep or left the place missing completely the end of compo (which was surprisingly disappointing this year).

So, what's the point of showing >25 instantly forgettable demos? Show us the juice, sparing the other ones to watch offline and still being able to vote for these entries.

At least one more day will give a some time to catch up with the best (last shown) entries.

FWIW, the weakest prods of the demo compo were probably also the shortest ones, probably adding up to less than 15 minutes in total. Removing those is not helping anyone in a two-hour compo.
(example: If you think the game of life thing should have been removed from the compo, that would have cut off less than a minute of the total compo length, including the slides)
It wasn't quite MS 2002 levels of mayhem, but 26 entries is stretching it. Problem is: If you do ASM-like pre-selection, complete with juries and whatnot, you add another level of complexity and drama. (my personal cut-off point is at about 16-18 demos in a row. And those better be entertaining to at least some degree. :)

I would assume a lot of the convenience issues can be solved by simply making the break mid-compo announced and pre-planned so people who don't care about the first half or need a quick leak/beer can plan accordingly. The RBBS pee-break demo a few years ago with a time-remaining worked wonders tbh.

A great and well organized party. I enjoyed the high quality entries (thanks Titan!) and the tasty vegan wraps. Free hotel shuttles are totally a luxury and very much needed given the elusive nature of the local Saarbrücken bus population.

I also managed to inflict on myself the True Revision Shower Experience in Hotel Meran because I didn't realize the tap was installed the wrong way and you had to turn it to *blue* to get warm water :)

And to be honest, I expected the PC Demo compo to have 30 entries. So it wasn't that bad.

Another excellent revision, will return next year. But please get your busdrivers in line for next year, on sunday evening the bus left at 03:54 when we were leaving the hall.

seconding faxe. i was sitting in exactly that bus, and was appalled by the bus driver's action. he clearly saw that it wasn't 4:00 yet, and clearly saw people running towards the bus, but didn't care at all. dear orgas, please make sure to instruct the drivers accordingly next year.

other than that, i immensely enjoyed the party, and will make sure to be back next year.

some feedback on the food: the wraps were absolutely delicious, please keep these guys for next year! the crêpes were nice, too. the pizza, however, was very mediocre (it had the consistency of frozen aldi pizza, only for 4 times the price), and so were the sausages (i had a curry wurst three times, and two of them were clearly burnt, and the fries were too dry and hard). if you are looking for new food stands for next year: could you perhaps have one that sells something that is a bit less fast-food-ish? like the excellent indian food stand from two years ago? or maybe a stand selling soups, salads and the like?

I agree that the PC Demo compo should not be preselected. We spent a lot of time on the Twitch stream encouraging people to have a go at demoscening and the PC Demo compo, despite being the perceived "big event," is also in many ways the most accessible to newbies due to its lack of restrictions. Getting preselected out is demoralising enough if you're used to it, never mind if you're a nervous firstimer.

With hindsight maybe the 4K and 64K compos should have been the final ones (IIRC the PC Demo is not always the final one shown) but you don't know that until all the entries are in.

yes, i'm absolutely against preselection in the democompo. i can live perfectly fine with preselection in single-artist compos (my tune got preselected this year, too), but demos are too much of an effort to subject the creators to such potential disappointment.

The problem with moving 4K/64K to Sunday would have been that two compos whose deadlines were still in the future would have had to be moved to Saturday to keep the schedule intact, I guess. That's kinda impossible. :)
@dipswitch, I think the meat stand is the same one as every year. I didn't thought it was fine.

The pizza was a little odd, but not awful. Was a little funny to see it being cut with an electric reciprocating saw. Crepes is the same great stand as every year. I think it's hard to get a set of food stands that pleases everyone about everything.

As to the rest of the party, great as usual! Thank you orgas!
@Saga: Yeah, I know. You'd have to predict which category would be the one to blow up this year. :) They did swap the PC Demo and Amiga Demo compos once, but both of them had the same deadlines.

P.S. I don't know how Logicoma managed to infiltrate the whole Saarbrücken city center!

I'm also totally fine with 26+ entries in the pc demo compo, the longer the nicer IMO and one of several key reasons I attend a demoparty for! Although I felt Revision has seen better pc compos overall in previous years, it was still very entertaining and well executed.

What a fantastic party this was yet again, so many fun moments and drinks were shared and there was plenty to see and do, not nearly enough time to take every opportunity that arose to chat with others. In that regard I really enjoyed the quieter times, for instance during the saturday afternoon hours between the two compo blocks, it gave people a real chance to socialize or collaborate on projects without the fear of missing some scheduled event. Could even use some more times like that across the party.

I have very little to nitpick about really, apart from one thing that left me a bit disappointed: I found that the overall sound quality of the mainstage PA system was really poor this year, and definitely sub-par standard compared to earlier Revisions. The high frequencies (and only those) were way over the top, as if the high band faders had been pulled all the way up on the mixer. I don't mind loud and powerful music but it made Willbe & Co's excellent performance almost unbearable. What a shame.

The organizing team is a super friendly bunch of people and they usually helped solve any party-related issues on the spot. It is totally awesome to know you guys and I hope you will be making many more awesome demoparties together in the future.

short addendum on party-food: I had ham+cheese crepes and chips / fries and stirred eggs from the food stall and they were very good, no complaints there :)

Also apologies to Blueberry .. for my multiple-missed opportunity to meet you in the hall for some Oidos synth experimenting, I totally should have skipped checking out the fireplace 'for a minute' in favor of going back to my pc for some synth action. Rest assured though that my first Oidos track won't be long before it arrives, I'm dead serious :)

It was super awesome party. So many great entries. Usually it has been like 1 great 64k and couple of OK ones. But this year there were several great ones + many very good ones. PC demo was awesome. Maybe bit too long overall, but there was definitely great demos even in the so called "not-so-quality" group of the demos. This time I managed to watch all the compos and no regrets, great content in all of them.

Live coding was cool, definitely need more of this.

I am also really glad people liked our short film. "I won revision" mug is awesome, very proud to have it. :D

Who made this year's jingles, and could we get a pack? I like to collect those.
