Apple PPC G5 (OSX) anyone???

category: general [glöplog]
Anyone coding demos on G5?

Been there, done that, apple broke tools too many times, stopped supporting apple.

The G5 was fun toy though, and no longer supported, so there's no risk of apple breaking it anymore.. Hmmmm.. =)

I have a G5 here. never considered coding for it.

There are some PPC Mac demos out there though, maybe that's what you're looking for?

(I have a suspicion some of those should be marked OSX Intel instead, but it's a start)

I had one as my music production workstation until the PSU died recently. It was a beast. Still looking for a replacement. :(

For laughs, I really want do do an Oculus Rift thing on PPC.

Yep. I have one too. Buyed it for very low price from second hand PC shop. Cleanded from dust, repaired case (damaged legs), upgraded with 8gb used ram and used 1tb hdd, upgraded to better AGP gpu. Now I have dualboot osx and morphos.

There are PSUs on ebay in good price.

G5 is running Renoise tracker pretty fast also blender3d and freecad. Its great computer.
Maybe good alternative for demos to PC or turbocard AMIGAs...

To be honest, the G5 in 2016 is just a slow PC with shitty gfx card support. But still, go right ahead and make some demos for it, especially if you make them for MorphOS :)

Sure. But on other hand my 2xPowerPC 2GHZ,8gb ram is more powerful than Yours Commodore Amiga. With good radeon (512mb) is gpu good too.But demos are not about specs.Demos are about taking breath by demo on low specs platforms... See Atari Falcon or A1200 demos as example.

Yeah, seen (and made) several of those already :D

Anyway, like I said, go make demos on the G5 if you feel like it, just don't expect anyone else to do them for you.

With high enough vantage point, everything is a slow PC.

You know, if someone wants to keep their G5 running (or at least have it running several times per week) and run Debian on it, the automated test infrastructure for libopenmpt could need some buildbot running on a real big-endian machine. ;)
I have a Mac mini G4 with Debian sitting idle, and I could try it. How does the build thingy work, and how serious is the stuff, I mean what happens if I don't remember to run it for a week or something? What version of Debian is needed?

yzi: It should be at least Debian 7 (Wheezy), that is, gcc 4.7 or newer should be available.
Whenever some new code is commited, the buildbot master (i.e. our server) contacts the buildbot slave (i.e. the Mac) to rebuild the code; since we want to catch possible regressions on all platforms as early as possible, the slave should run as often as possible. It's not the end of the world if it doesn't run for a week, but it can make finding regressions harder if it's considerably longer than that.
So can someone make a sinesroller for it, so we can "whooo" it :D

it's not "whoo" unless its a glenz vector on a system which isn't designed to do glenz, Future Crew taught us that.

PowerMac G5 optimized twister and plasma are the necessary first steps on the way of becoming a legitimate demo platform.

Saga Musix: I have an Mac Mini G4 and PowerMac G5 not in use (well, the Powermac is in use as a table). I'm not sure where the Mac Mini is at the moment, but if you are interested you can have it for free.

neon: I'm definitely interested! :)
@Saga: would a 450 MHz G4 Cube be of any use? I was dicking around with Linux on it a while ago but never got it set up quite right.

I tried building it. It seems to take something like 30-40 minutes to build "make CONFIG=gcc", the poor old Mac blowing with full steam. I'll try the autotools thingy later on.

Cube is 2x more powerful than Blizzard PPC...

If saga doesn't want the Mini or the Cube, I'll gladly take them :P

Sorry, I didn't mean I'm giving away the Cube, I meant I'd set it up to run his distributed build test environment. :P

worth a shot! :P

but yeah, I have a G5 here too. I can maybe help out with that test enivronment too. Dunno when, but saga knows how/where to reach me ^^
