1in10 : animations aren't about looking good . but if you like very realistic animations, there are quite a few, like Beowulf .

trixter, VileR: When I cut the cord, the idea was that I would watch TV on the net - here in India, TV is in the process of shifting to the net, both the "traditional old people's (i.e. what my mother watches)" shows, as well as cool stuff, including all these new shows targeted at the youth - such as one called Pitchers, which is about the startup scene in India.
Unfortunately, my net is so goddamn slow, that I can't watch Youtube! I can only watch it late at night, after 12, when my ISP's "night quota" kicks in - which, I just don't get around to doing all the time! Too fantastic to believe, in 2016, eh? :)

Omid: All those, like Polar Express and so on, including Beowulf (didn't see the whole thing, but a little bit on TV) are *extremely* good - excepting the eyes! They don't have any soul in them - you can tell straightaway that you're looking at something artificial :(

Btw, I saw a little clip of that new Warcraft movie somewhere, I have to say, it's character animation taken to the next level! It's literally smoother than butter! Wonder how they did that..... (didn't notice the eyes here, though... :) )

Bitnaughty: not even beowulf creators' intention was 100% realism . if you want graphics that are literally unrecognisable from reality, you can watch movies (that's what this thread was supposed to be about, talking about tons of CGI per frame in movies, no?) . If you watch something like Godzilla , even with all that CGI you could still tell the beast is artificial, since such a thing never exists in real world !
but take something like Avengers for example; MUCH, MUCH, more of it is actually all CGI than what you might guess without seeing the Behind The Scenes videos . so much of what you see in it and just assume they've filmed normally is ALL CGI .
Or Fast and Furious 7 . I personally realised Paul Walker was dead and he was CGI'd throughout the whole damn thing only after the movie ended with the line 'for Paul' !

Omid: Actually the discussion was about the emphasis being on the visuals of the movie, as opposed to the Story. (that is to say, replacing it). Not about how much CGI there is per frame.

I heartily dislike all of the American TV and movie industry's principle of relying on *sensationalism* to sell their movies.

I have never seen any of those movies btw :)

I think "sensationalism" may not have been the absolute correct word - the word I had in mind was "spectacle" - which is really the same thing, and Hollywood *has* relied on it extensively.
In the case of *Godzilla* in particular, I can't tell you whether it replaced the story or not, because, as I said, I didn't see it. It's highly possible that it did, though.

to be fair, there were cheap movies with flat stories even before CGI took over.

Heh, thanks for the opinion :) Maybe someday. (Just to say - here in India, they've made torrents Illegal, that is to say, if you go to a torrent site, the police can come around and catch you!! I doubt it's happening in practice (they'd have to jail the entire country, probably! :) ), but, y'know...the law *has* been made!
I support this initiative myself, but for the moment it does mean that I can't watch anything....)
