Using shared display with phones as controllers

category: general [glöplog]

I am looking for projects were multiple people can interact on a shared display (e.g. big TV/ projector) and use their phones as controllers connected to a WLAN.

An example would be this: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=66871 (already send them a mail)

I am interested in binaries and sourcecode, so do you know similar games?

KrispyK did a very cool one at Sundown: https://files.scene.org/view/parties/2016/sundown16/wild/massivemultitap.zip

Basically super mario, but the crowd connected via smartphone, and it picked a pair of people at random every 20 seconds. One person controlled movement, the other jump... you can imagine how well this works, especially at a party :D

tmp have done a bunch of games with this mechanic - 5K Run Simulator, How We Make Demos and I guess Touch Me Together (which I don't actually remember, probably because the Revision game compo has a habit of coinciding with the record-all-the-things-for-the-oldskool-compos frenzy).

At Sundown this year we had Massively Multiplayer Game Tap, a version of Super Mario Bros where random pairs of people were assigned the controls, one on left/right, the other jumping.

On the non-demoscene-originated front, Fibbage and Quiplash make regular appearances on Sunday morning at Sundown and sort of fit into this category...

i've been developing such a system for my company for a couple of years now (started with a quiz voting system, ended up as a game controller for massive audience).

we used it on a few commercial projects like the avengers exhibit game for example.

i been redoing it from scratch into an open source system to assist me on live performances (giving control of the visuals to the audience): https://github.com/psenough/assisted_performer

will have the first "gig" using it later in september.

thinking of doing some interactive games/demos with it for demoparty entries on 2017.

i must say i checked the videos from tmp's games and they pretty much sucked on implementation (the concept of some of them was actually cool). just being a mess where you don't know what you're doing or how you're supposed to interact.

there are a lot of usability constraints on these kind of systems that needs to be addressed on design for it to be fun, the most direct one being hard to tell what the hell you are actually controlling on the big screen. you need either a small tutorial or clear indications on your controller. the player needs to intuitively understand what they are doing. just tagging their names in an avatar in the middle of dozens of others doesnt work. even console games with only 4 players on same screen can already be quite confusing.

typical single button mashing game mechanics can also be entertaining but are also a bit boring (and hammer the network more :D).

i believe there is still a lot that can be done on these kind of systems. (especially using the accelarometers)

Find a game that doesn't center around the single player (such as yeah, a football game or something) and project from AirDroid or one of the phones? Or did I misunderstand something? The OP wasn't entirely clear. Anyway. AirDroid. Distinctly minty.

May I suggest doing a version of http://www.lemonamiga.com/games/details.php?id=2766 ? great party game but limited to 8 players in the Amiga version (and you need a larger screen for more players I guess)
Thanks for all the links, I will look into it within the next days.
