pouet - new platforms

oops sorry, here's the neo-geo icon by itself:

And here are two alternative "wild" icons I made some years ago, and I think were already posted to this thread:

BB Image
The corners aren't transparent but I can fix that.

So basically what I'm planning right now is:
- Replace the "Wild" icon with the "?!" one
- Create a "Video" platform
- Move all entries in the Wild category that are in animation/video compo to "Video"

That should give us some headway on having some of the database converted.

Thoughts?

sounds good to me. I would call it Animation/Video though, video has a certain conotation with camera footage that's been edited and we have quite a few wilds that are pure animations.

i would also suggest to change the red in that ?! into an orange or something. since that red is a bit too dark, hard to distinguish from the black background and there are quite a few other red icon platforms already: nes, jaguar, rpi to name a few. so another color that is not so used would help distinguish amongst them better.

freem: sorry to be picky but that neogeo icon doesnt have the same borders all the other icons do, would be better if it did. icon looks good though.

Orange version:

(still can't get transparency right, sorry)
Also an alternative icon for Lynx platform, as I find the current one a bit too blurry:

I think the "shortfilm" compo (at least here prods should be moved to animation/video too.
good idea

Cool. One thing though, the term "alternative platform" seems more fitting than "Wild".

p01: hmm, i see it the other way round- "alternative platform" seems to imply that there must be at least some kind of platform involved, which is not the case for a significant amount of prods delivered to "wild" categories. example: live reenactments of famous demos ;)

But there is now a new "animation/video" "platform", as well as a "liveact" prod type. So "wild" as a platform should indeed be "there is some kind of platform", everything else goes in "animation/video"?

There is at least a simple way to sort prods between these two: does the download link point to an executable/sourcecode, or to a video? (well, except the two oscilloscope demos where the download link is a .flac audio file: youscope and oscillofun, and maybe other unusual cases)

Btw, probably all prods with a download link ending in .avi/.mov/.rm could be moved to the video platform as a first guess?

PulkoMandy: Your logic seems to be that every prod with a video file as download must be either liveact or animation/video. In the majority of cases that assumption will prove correct but I still think it's an oversimplification. Maybe reenactments were not the best example, in that case just take homebrew hardware entries... They're not a liveact for sure, and not animation/video despite the result pretty much always being a video file, and quite often not running on an "(alternative) platform" either. "Wild" seems to function quite well as a catch-all term for such prods so my point is, "if it ain't broken don't fix it" :)

I think that actually results in more misses than hits.

Heh heh.

a "liveact" prod type

FWIW I always thought that was unnecessary.

@havoc: yes, "wild" is fine otherwise we'll soon find the need for yet another platform in the list. However, for all prods that run realtime on "something" (can be a custom tailor-made platform or whatever), if there is only a video provided, I'll say "binaries or it didn't happen".

Even in the case of youscope and oscillofun, where there isn't really a binary, the download link points to a flac file which you can use to replicate the setup (if you have suitable hardware).

We now have several solutions to express things:
Platform = wild, Type = demo => demo for strange hardware
Platform = wild, Type = wild => Nobody knows what this is :)
Platform = video, Type = wild => just a video (random "trip to party" things, etc)
Platform = video, Type = liveact => video footage of a liveact
Platform = video, Type = demo => non-realtime demo? There are several prods which look like demos except they are not realtime or generated by an executable

Platform = windows (or whatever), Type = wild: somebody managed to make a prod that does not fit any of the other types on Pouet!

And so on and so forth. As a first step, let's see if we can get all the (obvious) videos in the "video" platform. Then we can see what's left in "wild" and decide what to do.

Some special case I came accross:
- There are some papermags registered as platform: wild type: diskmag
- One prod is about typesetting and printing bookmarks for the altparty on 1800-ish hardware. Maybe a better place for it would be on Got Papers.
- I can think of a video from Gasman which was about networking several ZX Spectrum and making them play some Mahler symphony. I think it could qualify as liveact/wild and platform ZX Spectrum?
My definition of "alternative platform" is something where there's a chance for everyone (resources permitting) to replay the demo for themselves.

This means two things:
- There are some sort of documentation on how to run the demo (i.e. the FLAC files for the oscilloscopes, the circuit diagram for Craft, homebrew adapters, etc.)
- The hardware must be acquirable by standard means: oscilloscopes are relatively easy to find, microcontrollers aren't that complicated to build or get built, you can even get a VirtualBoy from eBay if you really want to.

If the demo only runs once in a particular environment (i.e. because it's running on a church belltower or a very specific ATM or the lights of a building), that doesn't make it a _platform_, that just makes it a nice hack.

yeah, noby. i think it's video or wild... someone has to decide
Technically it's Win32, in the former case it's just that noone still has the source (or can compile it) IIRC :D
