The US has hackerspaces, user groups, makerspaces, etc. Heck, Apple apparently started at a users group. It just takes some people to step up and organize. Reach out and say thank you to whoever has helped make your events happen. They are amazing peeps
Looking through my NAID CD files, I also (re-)found "The Stumbling" (great name) outside of LA in 1997.. again, another small house party. And Wesside '98 was in Santa Cruz.
