Well then.

Hahaha :)

A small list of people who one shouldn't annoy for those who tend to forget:
-cops
-bouncers
-pouet-moderators

Haha:)

The ticket pre-sale has started!

This time it’s also possible to order the official party t-shirt in advance. So what are you waiting for?! :-)

Our competition rules are online

Why is the Atari 2600/VCS not mentioned in Oldskool? In the past, it sure hat more submissions than other mentioned platforms.

And it is VERY (olds)cool! :)

Media Facade Competition

Revision will again be cooperating with the experimental media lab (xm:lab) within the Academy of Fine Arts Saar (HBKsaar) and calls out to all demosceners to submit their artwork for the media facade, a large backprojection screen, covering the entire glass facade of the academy’s gallery building.

So, groups or single artists - please have a look at this out-of-the-ordinary competition and submit new or converted productions. Remote entries are allowed and welcome!
The winners will be chosen by a jury and presented during a short show during Revision.
The three best submissions will be played regularly on the media facade in Saarbrücken and the best one will receive a nice trophy and and invitation to the academy to hold a workshop, do a talk or something similar.

So - for more information - check out the competition page and create something a little different from the usual Demoscene production.

Announcing the 2D Demo Competition (as well as a special prize)

This year, we want to give you the opportunity to go back to the roots and make some Demos using only 2D effects and assets.

To help you hit the ground running, our friends at King are giving away invites to use their free 2D Game Engine Defold. Of course you're free to use Defold not only for productions of this new compo but for everything else, including the Game Competition.

As an additional incentive - King will award a special prize for the best production made with their engine.

Check out the rules on our website, get your copy of Defold and start with your entry!

Okay so that 2D compo sounds fun but the wording is seriously lacking.

We don't want to see any 3D shaderobjects here but a nice parallax scroller and other similar depth tricks are certainly allowed.

Disregarding whatever "shaderobject" might be, what exactly IS your definition of "3D"? Anything vector-related? So how about e.g. a voxel landscape? Or a tunnel?

Those are abviously 2.5D so If I was to decide I would say these aren't allowed.

then again, last time i looked at how voxel landscapes or tunnels are coded, they look like a 'depth trick' to me :) also. wormholes! <3

Disallow anything that gives a perception of surfaces not parallel to the screen. This rules out voxel effects but permits parallax, zoomers and such.

Also, apparently everything in that engine exists in 3D space apparently, so how does that work? (:

Blueberry: Unless someone works out that they can do volume-effects using billboards!
and 2.5D pixel art isnt allowed either! ;)

Say you have a point cloud and the points are rendered as small flat circular "splats" and they happen to move on screen more or less randomly, but by complete accident the trajectory resembles 3d rotation, is this already forbidden? If not, can you increase point density, so it resembles a 3d surface? NumbRes/Fairlight is a good example, and if you would introduce only slightly more randomness to it, it would be really impossible to proof that trajectories correspond to any 3d surface rotation/projection, even in non-Euclidean geometry (and I am not even going into fractal geometry here).

To make my point shorter and perhaps clearer:
Is NumbRes/CNCD&Fairlight 2d or 3d (except fluid part, which is obviously 3d) and if 3d how much you have to randomize those particle trajectories, so you it will not be considered as 3d anymore?

Just make a 4D demo.

tomkh: .. it's 3d. it's all 3d. all the scenes have depth & most of them have a moving camera in 3d. :)
added on the 2016-02-06 21:01:13 by smash smash
tomkh's point would've made sense if you'd store 2D pointclouds of X,Y,Z where the 'Z' would be just some grayscale depth gradient value to fake depth tho. it's something i had on my effects for an Amiga demo wishlist but... too much other stuff to do atm :)

I know the demoscene is all about creatively overcoming limitations, but if you really, really want to put 3D effects into your demo, then you could always... not enter it into the 2D demo compo? :-)

smash: of course it's all represented in 3d, you think I didn't know or something?
I was merely effing with the definitions, as you could in theory make a simplified rendering of similar scenes, but with just 2d sprites like in oldschool "bob" effects using just 2d engine. To be fair, their engine will most likely die with that much particles, but again, I am thinking about simplified NumbRes-like scenes. So, would this violate contest rules or not?

Here is a rather ad-hoc and silly example of an object that is merly 2d or 3d. A set of fixed-size point quads moving along 3d sphere, but projected and deformed in 2d.

gasman: good point, so just hypothetically / when trying "too hard".

Roughly two weeks left to register for the airport shuttles!
So, if you booked your flights but forgot to sign up for a shuttle yet - go there and do so. If you didn't book your flights yet then well, guess what - book your flights goddammit! ;-) (AND sign up for the shuttles).
