When i run that 64k at dosbox, all I see is nothing but black screen!
The 64k is called Alone by Chrysalis.
I WANT TO SEE THAT 64K!

It works for me in Oracle's Virtualbox with default settings.

I didn't try one of doxbox nightly builds, maybe it works there also - maybe it needs certain specific settings...

I also guess taht it might work on SVN-Daum or DOSBox-X builds, will try later, because I want to watch it first on real machine becoz it makes some bleeps on AWE64 512kb (doesn't have GUS atm)

but I have a SB32 CT3600 with 2 MB SIMMs :) and intro does have some support for EMU8000

SVN-Daum just hangs on black screen, and DOSBox-X throws "ERROR CPU:Illegal Unhandled Interrupt Called 6" int stderr.log then hangs

DoxBox is overrated. Works perfectly in PCem version 10, with the following config:

Award 430VX PCI
ATI Graphic Pro Turbo (Mach 64 GX) (4MB)
Intel Pentium 200Mhz (for locked 70fps, faster = bad sound clipping)
Cache: Infinite
Video speed: Fast VLB/PCI
Sound Card: Sound Blaster16
32MB RAM
Gravis Ultra Sound: enabled

Create a HD file from PCem, format and install with a DOS floppy image and then add stuff to the HD file with Winimage. This emulator rocks. Support down to the original IBM PC with 8088 4.77Mhz and up to Pentium MMX 300, with real PC BIOS, Voodoo graphics, Sound Blaster AWE32 with original ROM, Gravis ultra sound ans much more.

DOSbox is the easy solution to just plug and run and it works fairly well. But yeah, PCem is more interesting, it just needs setup. I just see they updated with new version, wow, gotta check!

I need to see that 64k. I like oldskool effects. Please. Someone should do the video.

In all fairness PCem isn't as straighforward to set up as DOSBox.

UPDATE: Use this graphic card instead of the ATI:

S3 Virge DX, 4MB, bilinear filtering and dithering ON

It's the best video card of the bunch. It's VESA 2.0 out of the box, no need to run univbe or SciTech Display Doctor (in fact, SDD seems to cause problems with various demos). The demo "Alone" will run in 32bit color instead of 8 with this video card. Also, do not run SMARTDRV.exe, it fuck things up too.

If you go on PCem forum, you'll see that it's currently actively developed, especially for 3DFX improvement. Not much news in the last few years on DosBox side. You actually must rely of unofficial releases to see some improvement. Most of the problematic under-1K-DOS-demos that do not run properly in DosBox run just fine in PCem. For instance, out of the top 20, the only 256 bytes demo I couldn't run is the fantastic "Megapole", but it doesn't run in DosBox either! lol It runs fine in Virtualbox Windows XP, which mean that despite being a DOS demo, it was developed for newer hardware.

Beyond the hard drive setup, which I explain how to do, there is nothing else. Of course, you must know at least how to set your sound blaster environment variable in autoexec.bat, which is "SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H5 T6" btw, but if someone can't even do that, he/she does not deserve to see a DOS demo.

I played with PCem a bit yesterday. I like that you can select exact CPUs, mhz, gfx cards, speeds. But then, it's still hard to use (I would make an HD img, then use dosbox to read this so that I can transfer easilly stuff) and then I don't see an option to give maximum speed possible, like in Dosbox. So you would try to run H-Plus for example and it would still not be smooth enough because you can't set up a Pentium at 200mhz or something. While Dosbox will just bruteforce it to max speed and it runs like a charm.

I still haven't checked the 3dfx though, but they need to have a max speed option or being able to set imaginary mhz, unless I haven't seen it. I would like to see if it outperforms Dosbox with the dynamic recompiler.

Is there a utility actually to easily read the HD IMG file and transfer files from PC?

ramon: I think you're a bit too optimistic here, the ROM hunting alone makes the process considerably more tedious, and setting a HDD up isn't as straightforward either. That's not to say it doesn't work, but that's the thing people like about DOSBox, it's just fire-and-forget with a pretty good success rate.

ramon: what kind of display setup are you using to watch 70 Hz screen modes? I've found it very difficult to get displays to show 70 Hz modes. Or 50 Hz.

Elsewise it runs natively on Freedos as the Function organizers requested (so if you use Bochs x86 pc emulator for example and freedos hdd image it will work fine).

Any DosBOX issue is related to the fact that DOSBox does not implement clock-cycles correctly and is a well-known issue.

cmov isn´t pentium, it´s pentium pro / pentium II and up only. Did not appear prior to 1995.

How does PCemu hold up in emulation accuracy? Does it have the screen tearing problem DOSBox has due to bad timer accuracy? Could someone running PCemu try capturing something like Bomb - State of mind to check?
