Oh, and thanks to HTML5 I'll have mini-previews from now on. ATM only for Logic Design - Spring.

Oh yeah. And fuckings to Safari for not supporting Theora/Vorbis videos.

Another hefty update: http://keito.untergrund.net/
Still got a large quantity to upload, 720p and 1080p, will do that soon.

I'm most certainly enjoying! Space Travel looks awesome, and i grabbed it for my archives :)

However, H3O Breather bugs in these specific scenes:
0:38-0:42, 1:12-1:28.

That's why I'm still looking for the "real" version.

Another one I was looking for was this:
http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=19456 - Haikku by Exceed. but that's Java.

Speaking of 3state: Antimoney is still without a video (or even decent screenshots).

TL;DR Interest and feedback on getting some "high quality capture" central demo video archive going on.
--

I wonder.. having done a lot of democapturing for parties and other events, even to get stuff on YT, how much interest would there be for some more centralized archive with HIGH quality recordings (talking about 1080p60 PC, native RGB or svideo for older stuff), that could stand some mild transcoding as well ?

I have noticed that this seems to be a constant problem with organizing and such as It's really hard to do a "low effort" playlist for demoshows and finding some captures usually end up in 360p youtube rips unless you them yourself.

Goal with something like this wouldn't be an 100% open archive, but more like "on demand" as the video files would obviously be at least around 40Mbit bitrate for 1080p60. Say, a party says that they want to do a demoshow, they can get a list of the files and ask for x y and z. Of course this "on demand" would simply exist to filter out casual downloads as 20 demo videos could en up being over 50GB all of a sudden.

Video quality should be as good as possible within reasonable limitations, I am thinking of x/h264 with a really high bitrate and avoiding chroma subsampling for anything that is 2D and below XGA res (halves color res), hoping that I could hit some hardware decompression so that at least some lower end and other "off the shelf" systems could play it back and it wouldn't require too many codec installs. Some noise heavy demos might need heavier codecs and these can be tagged and transcoded for present use.
Anyone have experiences or ideas what something like this should aim for?
I've been mostly doing lagarith lossless and h264, 1080p60 at 40Mbit so far.
Doing anything over 1080p60 would be a nice way to future proof things a bit as well, getting a more compatible resize on the side for present showings. You never know if a codec ~10 years from now will be able to very efficiently compress a codec killer, Already having near lossless quality source for re-encodings would be very cool, considering that some systems are getting more and more rare, especially video processing/capturing hardware for older stuff can be tricky to deal with unless you really know where to look.

One big requirement and a challenge to get this set up would be that when people do their own "fraps" encodes, they could upload them someplace and a "master" will always be saved where the bitrate doesn't suffer from noise or flicker considerably, stuff that youtube tends to butcher even with highest profiles. Sure it might be large but it would save a ton of effort. I would of course share whatever I do for any event and whatever else I manage to capture, ranging from DOS stuff to consoles / home computers / modern PC, still, contributions by other people would really save a ton of time.

With transferring these around, there obviously will be a ton of storage need for something like this, I could just get some hotswap drives and just shove them on a shelf and document everything well. While I could do the storing part like this on my own, what would be the best method for distribution ?

Anyway, this is something I've wanted to do for a while, if this was to be done, it would have to be done right from the start as I want something that can be played back and the average user would never see the artifacts on typical demos, uniform format and a set table of frame rates (no mixing of 59.94Hz and 60.00Hz, tearing and stutter is bad!)

I've already been doing this sort-of behind the scenes for the past +5~ years in Finnish parties/events but I'd really like to kick something like this in to full gear and expand, make some use of the resources and acquired skills instead of letting it go in to waste, although there are some missing pieces still in the puzzle :)

raer, you have some nice videos already piled up, do you still have the source footage intact by any chance ? :)

Sorry for sort of hijacking and the wall of text!

Why not open a separate thread? I am interested in all sorts of capture things. Just last week I realized that after upgrading to an i7 Mac mini, I can capture all 50 frames per second from MSX machines with the lowly EasyCAP USB device. I don't think that was possible with my previous Mac with the same software and capture device. I can now re-encode to h.264 for viewing with media players on the big TV, and it's completely smooth without dropped frames. I haven't tried it with the C64 or Amiga yet though.

What I'd like to do is, try and find a reasonably cheap set of hardware and software, to capture and watch and possibly even _stream_ demos in their actual framerates. For oldskool demos the playback machine could be something like Raspberry Pi which has a composite video output and h.264 hardware. Demos MUST be watched in their original intended framerate with vsync and preferably CRT monitors. The YouTube and emulator crap and other kinds of framerate raped crap must stop.

Once again, Revision is coming... the most brilliant people in the world have made new oldskool demos for an appreciating and knowledgeable audience on location and watching internet streams, an audience with a very high ratio of smooth motion and frame rate freaks, many with CRT monitors at home... but will they actually get to see the things properly? (and I don't mean the drinking)

For MSX, I'd be really interested on collaborating with you to get high quality RGB caputres. I already had a bunch of the stuff with me at payback, when dealing with stuff "offline", I have a bunch of hardware and even two capture cards that can take in native RGB in it's native format, other card I got recently (datapath e2s) can sync to anything you put it to really, only problem seems to be that it needs some better tools than the stock ones, although it IS documented and flexible unlike other cards.

Datapath actually syncs to the screenmodes as-is (no preset resolutions / framerate).

I agree with a separate thread, also interested on sorting this stuff out in IRC some day as well ?
just drop me a PM 'oasiz' on IRCnet/Freenode.

Just moved in to a new place so things are still a bit messy but I could be interested on testing some more stuff after say.. revision ?

Your idea of raw signal generation trough r-pi also sounded really interesting during PB, my dream has been for a long time to have a really abstracted box with "plug and play" kind of mentality that just works.

oasiz: capped.tv was open to host high quality video captures at some point atleast... don't know how open micksam7 would be to rethink / toolchain the site to fit / discuss your idea. sorry if i'm not 100% on point with what you were saying, only skimmed through your post, didn't read it completely. :/

High quality, as in, archival purposes and not encoded with streaming in mind.
You could be looking at 1GB per minute in demos that don't compress that well, definitely not typical use.

iguana-pump plz. it runs terrible in dosbox so requires a real pentium+dos, i guess :)
It'd be sweet if someone were to capture this: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=7718 (qapmoc by Black Monks). FS-UAE refuses to recognize my AGA roms that fell out of the sky some years ago. By the looks of it it might not be a top notch prod but I'm having a Black Monks fetish right now and want to see it.
