The "Run Prods on Emulators" Thread

category: general [glöplog]
£20 sounds reasonable. Of course its easy to sell direct these days with paypal and whatnot. Let us know when its finished.

(I am kidding of course.. Nobody will pay for a directory scanner)

It does a lot more than just scan directories.

I'm willing to distribute it for free, as I figure it might no longer be commercially viable anyway, as id Software says.

What's the best spec to get "Tint" by Black Lotus to run well? It's one of those that has difficulty with emulators, it seems. I mean, I run it on 68040 and it's always shown flickering, massive artefacts and crashes about 2/3rds of the way in - it's annoying.

I could settle for my Mindcandy video version of it, but not with video artefacts I can't, and as for that unmixed audio - ugh!

I ran Tint quite nicely on my 020@28 turboboard.
It probably also runs on an 030, in which case that would be even better.

I have no choice but to use WinUAE (the latest version) and I'm stuck between "Run at A500/A1200 or cycle exact" (whatever CE means) or "Run as fast as possible".

When I chose the former it ran very slowly but made it to the end once, but selecting the latter caused it to run so fast and cause screen corruption, and it crashed anyway (as if the speed flew the thing to pieces).

So what are the specific UAE settings?

BTW, I've tried a lot of later demos and they seem to run fine on A4000, except Massive which flickers, despite the excellent vocals.

One thing that may be an issue is that unlike x86, 68k CPUs are not fully backward-compatible.
The 040 and 060 don't support certain instructions, and they need to be emulated in software.
Since demos generally take over the entire system, they may not have an emulator in place, and the demos may crash because some unsupported instructions are being executed.
A 68030 + 68882 FPU is the most capable configuration.

Last time I ran it and it crashed, it was on 68020 with no FPU and CPU speed at "A1200 speed".

Now I tried it as you suggested but I wasn't sure of the CPU Emulation Speed, and I set it to "fastest possible" and once again the picture broke up.

I think CPU emulation speed is my main issue.

DOSBox helped me to relive a very dear demo this morning that I have not seen in at least 15 years. thank you Qbix & team <3

Qbix & team... almost sounds like cubic & $seen :D
you do realize that "as fast as possible" does what it sais and clocks up the amiga until your actual cpu is out of cycles? in vice this is called WARP MODE i believe.

I guess I'm going to have to experiment and find a reasonable compromise somewhere.

fastest possible != warp mode, the chipset emulation still maintains correct speed. Warp mode can be enabled by pressing End+Page Up.

Just tried Tint on UAE, works fine for me with 68040/AGA/2+64 MB/Fastest possible.

If you have JIT enabled, disable it and see if it helps.

SUCCESS! Finally got Tint to work, although I had to use a different version of it, a different download. I used a typical A1200 config with a WB environment and lots of memory.

I'm finding now that 9 times out of 10 the reason a demo fails to work is because it's a bad download. Typical!

Did you get most of these bad ones from pouet download links, or?

The Pouet download link for Tint is completely fine!

I sometimes use an alternative site for Amiga demos called "Kestra Bitworld", and whilst I don't like their convoluted interface, I find them a good alternative to Pouet.net sometimes.

Yes, Pouet has the latest versions of the files, and this was the version I had until now that didn't work properly. It was a "fixed" version and I read the .doc file and it mentioned extended end music that covered the credits and that it would now run on an A4000/040.

The Kestra Bitworld version is older, and the music ends shortly into the credits, but at least it seems to run more stable than the above version. That's all I really wanted.

I can't get "Love" by Fairlight and Virtual Dreams to run when I download it, even in a WB environment. I understand I have to "assign" the drive, but can I provide an alternative download link with adfs?

Never mind, I found out how to do it, really simple!

Recently upgraded to WinUAE 3.2.1, and now find that "Massive" by Skarla no longer fully works at all.

On the immediately previous versions, it would play to the end but with a strange flicker to the graphics that looked like bitplane issues, but now on 3.2.1 when I run it it goes through the slideshow, the air-raid siren title and the screen stays black when the music starts, but after a few seconds it locks up with a screechy tone and eventually gurus.

So how can I get this demo to play again? Should I contact Toni at WinUAE HQ?
added on the 2015-12-07 19:33:48 by Foebane72 Foebane72
Does no-one honestly know how to fix this problem? No representatives from Skarla here?
added on the 2015-12-08 18:00:59 by Foebane72 Foebane72
Why would Skarla care if it runs in an emulator, as long as it runs on real hardware. If it stopped working in WinUAE there's either a bug in the emulator or something wrong with your configuration.

I heard it was common practice to develop software on emulators rather than real hardware - isn't that right?
