Mega65, what now?

category: general [glöplog]

This is a new platform being developed based on the Commodore 65 prototype, using an FPGA that yelds somewhere around 50 times the speed of a c64, supposedly has an updated graphics core as per the VIC-III, and a few megabytes of ram.

According to http://mega65.org/ (check the image with the copper bar stuff):

MEGA65 is compatible enough to boot using old ROMs and run much existing software.

I guess what "compatible enough" means but ok! :-)

Cool cool. Was there a demo ever for the C65? I know they are very rare.

Well, from what I understand, it is a full C65, meaning it does run also in C64 compatibility mode a bit like the C128. But what I read about it is that the video chip emulation is basically like having the VIC-II, VIC-III, and is said to have it's proprietary VIC-IV modes. Memory addressing modes are 16-bit, 20-bit and 28-bit. Supposed to use the C65 case design, so should incorporate a 3.5" floppy drive. Don't know much more really! How many megabytes of ram, disk space (1.8MB ?), cartridge port, IO port, user port, joystick ports (I guess!).

Well sort of a demo at least.

Yes very rare and expensive, ~15k euros.
