Announcing The Meteoriks!
We're very happy to announce a brand new award to honor demoscene productions of 2014. Two years after the end of the scene.org awards it is time to celebrate great computer art on the big stage again. In nine base and five special categories as well as a public choice award, we will recognize the best of the best of the previous year.
The Meteoriks are all about inclusion!
If you're a demomaker: Submit your production(s) for consideration
If you're a demoscene expert: Apply to one (or more) of the individual category juries
All others: You're welcome to submit your ideas for our 5 special awards as well as vote for your favourite production in our public choice category (starting in March)

Ugh... DUB Awards are for sceners, not the productions. This is a BIG difference.
Anyways, I'm happy that there's finally a PROPER followup to scene.org awards. I planned to made a demo about "bring back scene awards", but apparently someone already is doing that (bringing the awards back, not the demo), so there . :P

Considering he released 2 highly polished demos in march last year, and another released using his tech during the summer I doubt he needs this to make him interested.
Tomo: yeah, I looked at that earlier, but i didn't watch enough demos last year to know which might be suitable :(

Yeah, I wondered about that as well. I love the idea of bringing back awards, but limiting this to self-submissions has some big problems IMHO. The main problem I see is credibility, which is essential for the survival of any award. If inferior prods win because the creators of truly great prods haven't submitted theirs, I know I will have problems taking the awards seriously.
Plus, not all demo makers will hear about the awards, e.g. if they don't read Pouet and/or don't come to Revision. For example, are the makers of Secret Rooms active here?
Maybe allowing suggestions by third parties at least might help, if it's too much work for the judges to look at *every* demo (which I could understand).
Although I guess there are good reasons for this format. Could some organizer elaborate a bit?

I can see where you are coming from and appreciate the reasoning, but I still see the problems mentioned above. Wouldn't third-party submissions help with this while still maintaining transparency, for example if it's made public who made the suggestion?

First, it's the way demoparties work. If you want to take part in a demo competition (and win) you have to submit your work there, too. Secondly, many (if not most) movie, animation and music awards expect the authors (or anybody involved in the production) to submit their work for consideration as well.
The work of the jurors is hard enough as it is. Having them go through every demo released in 2014 is exhausting, impractical and many won't accept the job if that's the case. And - the juror of each category can add productions on their own in case some authors are not aware of the submission requirement (with the permission of the authors of course).
And, Kylearan, if you're worried about not everybody knowing about The Meteoriks - please spread the word. We're trying to reach as many as possible. So, the more people know about it, the better. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for elaborating! Especially the point about reducing workload is a very good reason, even more so considering the current general state of the demoscene.

Does "Best High-End Intro" mean that 4kb, 8kb and 64kb all have the same category?
And: I understand that authors have to submit their productions themselves, but I think this is difficult for the "Special Categories", because there you have to submit your prod AND suggest a new "special category that fits your prod" as well with looks a lot like "Gimme a damn prize" to me! :)
BTW: Who would ever suggest himself for a lifetime achievement award?!
