The Amiga Book from Retro Gamer covers the Demoscene
category: general [glöplog]
At least briefly, as part of The Amiga Underground article in said publication.
Their Top 5 Amiga Demos are:
State of the Art (Spaceballs) - Yawn, massively overrated if you ask me
9 Fingers (Spaceballs) - Better, but still not that good
Hardwired (Crionics + Silents) - That's more like it!
Pink Floyd - The Wall (Split Dimension) - What? Never heard of it
Desert Dream (Kefrens) - YAAY! But it's 5th! Should be #1!!
BTW, the comments on the end are mine.
Not much else to the article, except it goes on at length about PD and BBSs, and has a side-panel on Eric Schwartz - but they are sadly deluded if those five demos are the best the Amiga has to offer, I can think of dozens of better ones or ones just as great!

Sir: thanks for clearing that up
That is in part, a strange selection of demos for the top5.
At first i thought they meant Kefrens - The Wall, but no, they really mean the demo by Split Dimension!? It's like they've only seen a handful of amiga demos and had a limited set to choose from as a consequence.

Yes, if you ask me, the Demoscene was much, much more important to the Amiga than any amount of games. We really need a dedicated Scene magazine publication on shop shelves in the UK.
Well back in the day some amiga mags did have a small section each month dedicated to the demoscene. As for today, you're not gonna see a dedicated demoscene mag, as cool as that would be. Do people even buy paperback magazines anymore?
I bought the Amiga Book, so yes.
Sure, thats a book, I was talking about magazines. I for one still by books anyhow.

Are you actually being serious? :D
Sure I'm being serious, if the tech demo known as "Shadow of the Beast" had never made laypeople and kids aware of the true power of the Amiga, then the platform would forever be in the shadow of the Atari ST being fed substandard ports. This magazine as much as says that in an article about the trilogy.
Do they mention anything about the demoscene still being active today?
Not that I recall.

But what has this got to do with the demoscene?
I said "tech demo" - the Demoscene, as well as SotB, is where people could see the true power of the Amiga. People wouldn't have been aware otherwise.
Uhh... Have to say i can't second their top demos *at all*

i don't understand why Enigma by Phenomena is not the first one.
Enigma gets a screenshot (the HAM image of the green balls through a fractal) but is not mentioned by name: the caption says how the Demoscene was not really game-related, but the programming talent from it went on to make games better.
They also covered PD games like Scorched Tanks and Megaball, and they've got a Top 10 of the PD games.
The demoscene is not as important as you pretend it.
It is a "small" community of computer-enthusiasts with the penchant for self-glorification.

So, basically what you're saying is that most Amiga users could only see what the Amiga was capable of from SotB.

Most Amiga games were basic ST ports, that's my point. There weren't many other games that showed off the Amiga that much, I'm guessing: Maybe Defender of the Crown and other Cinemaware games, but not much else, I think.

Yes, but most people never saw any demos. I understood your original statement as a claim that the demoscene had any kind of significant role in the success of the Amiga. :)
Perhaps because I spent more time programming games and apps and watching demos on my Amigas than playing games. I actually never really got into Amiga gaming compared to A8 gaming.

Ok, so you were only talking about your personal experience. In that case I misunderstood you.
Well, yes, but should I be saying that it's my personal experience? I thought it was obvious. It's like, do people really have to put IMHO for everything they say about something? ;)
