I see there are mixed views. I just see the Amiga as a VERY low spec PC these days.

Sure it was a great machine in its day, but it has nothing going for it now. Everything that can be done on an Amiga can be done on a PC much easier and much better.

That's not an insult to the Amiga scene, it's a fact, and a lot of people would love to see the Amiga scene spirit, ideas and determination brought upto date.

And am I the only one to see that most of the great Amiga demos of the last couple of years have been 3d flybys or object shows?

Because a given hardware is technically outdated, it should not be a demo platform anymore?
On the contrary, there is even more challenge to it! Producing amazing things on low-end/outdated hardware is part of the so called "demoscene spirit".

When people stop producing demos on Amiga/Atari/C64/etc..., the demoscene will really miss something imo.

It's like asking a painter why he's using aquarel instead of oilbased paint or similar metaphores... imho it's not the platform, but what you do with it.

Especially groups like TBL and MaWi has proven that Amiga still can compete against pc demos (just compare the quality of the amiga demo compo versus pc democompo at BP04). Even if they werent technically as powerful as current PCs, they are still swell as they were beautifully crafted, something a shitload of pc demos still miss.

Why don't all the PC coders move over to the Amiga instead? =-)

Well, in the end we just do it for the hot scene-groupies.

It would be just intresting for me to see what people switching to other platforms could produce. Not just to PC, but I would be really curious to see releases from people switching from something modern to C64, CPC or the opposite. Once upon, I was really curious to see PCs real limits. What would my eyes see, if someone would work the same way (counting every cycle, writting wicked unrolled codes) on PC. But I guess it's much harder to reach the limits here. At least cycles and unrolled codes makes not the same sense.. (Or?). So, I prefer old machines for that challenge and PCs for something nice looking. It would be just cool to see what people would produce in diferrent platforms!

Hm.. I'll say some more.
In my mind and in my heart, the only viable platforms for creating stunning demos are ones with severe hardware limitations and uniform hardware.
Like C64, ECS Amiga, consoles, mobile phones etc.

I think the fall of the Amiga scene began with accelerator cards. And no-one cares about doing optimized stuff for the pc anymore, neither sceners nor game creators.

If you have 20 years to explore a platform, you are bound to push its limits and make something impressive.

Um.. Um.. Where am I going with this? Where everyone has gone before, I guess..
Except.. I feel that to keep the Amiga platform alive, one would have to go back to its roots, and create only ECS/OCS productions, or stick with unaccelerated AGA. I never liked AGA anyway so..

If you are all about restrictions and pushing the limits of a machine, you really shouldn't be using extra ram, CPUs and accellerators.

By sticking accellerator cards and junk into your Amiga, you're admitting that you want a more powerful and capable machine. So why not just change platform? Stick a Commodore logo on your PC if it makes you feel better.

Granted it can be seen as saying that they want a more powerful machine but it doesn't, however, say that they want that more powerful machine to be a PC. Moving over to developing for the PC says that and, since they're not doing so (or this thread wouldn't be here) that says far more about their opinions than the accellerators do.

Yes that is true, BUT upgrading the low-end/outdated hardware defeats this very point, don't you think?

Another thing that defeats this point is when most Amiga graphics, 3d and music is created on a PC and the demo is viewed via winuae on a PC.

Amiga demos of today are just PC demos with reduced quality!

you can see many people are into amiga these days.. tell me one reason why to force them to do something when they're having fun with their machines.. when NOBODY cares about amiga i'll say.. yep, amiga is dead.

I don't get what the big deal is over a computer platform. I can understand someone being loyal if they work for the company, but otherwise why does it matter about the platform?

If you're so anti-Mictosoft, get a pirate copy of Windows and never buy any of their other products.
