Evoke 2014 - August 8 - 10 in cologne/köln

category: parties [glöplog]
While matching up filenames for the Evoke 2014 compos in Demozoo, I noticed that two entries are missing:
0000000000000000000000000001 from the PC demo compo doesn't have a file on scene.org
Soul Feeder by Unreal from the graphics compo is missing as well. Unreal uploaded a screenshot of it to Demozoo, but the file is missing on scene.org!

I had this weird "I have seen that guy before"-feeling the whole time...until...

slider: I recalled the spot instantly, but I thought that must have been some lookalike guy :)

looks like okkie's cousin!
Some more feedback, even if it is late. I apologize in advance for this sounding like a rant. Had a great time at evoke and will be there next time.

  • Placing the oscilloscope noise act directly after the democompo made the componight the worst ever, regarding the "party" in "demoparty". Especially after the awesome compos with the best atmosphere ever (had my pants off for the first time!), it instantly killed the party mood because there was no dancing possible and even talking was difficult outside. It felt immediately like "party is over, go home" when the night was still good for a few hours -- which is the most enjoyable part for me usually: after rocking the compo (or not), the tension subsides and it's time to party. I was probably not the only one who didn't hang on until lug00ber started playing, which is a shame because I'm sure it rocked. The oscilloscope act in itself was interesting, but would have been better placed at some afternoon time between compos to provide entertainment.
  • Some glitches in the beamteam performance: fucking up the order on the prods, not immediately noticing it, then not correcting via microphone (writing on the beamslides gets you only so much attention). Also apparently there wasn't a jingle played at every compo start (I didn't really notice because I was coding and, well, there was apparently no jingle). I do realize this is seriously difficult to get right and I don't want to blame whoever was at the controls at the time. But this is evoke and not some 60-people-in-moms-basement party. If it doesn't work good enough, there's always a way to improve conditions for the next time to increase the likelihood of everything working out fine.
  • Equipment was really good. Projector and bigscreen were top quality, audio was good as well. Smallscreens at various places were awesome as usual, as was the smaller screen next to the bigscreen.
  • Chairs were the worst, but I guess you know that. Tables were good. A little bit more ambient light shining on the tables near the middle/back of the hall would have been okay.
  • Trophy medal things were funny, but don't look too well on the trophy shelf. Better than last year's though. (Personally, having something nice to take home is way more motivating to me than prizemoney)
  • No invitation :( You can always ask.

I wouldn't have bothered to write all this if this was some party that I attended for the first time. Because it was a good party and I have no reason to complain. But evoke was my first party and I've been there every year since then... so I probably care a bit more. Nothing will ever be perfect, but for me one aspect of the Scene is constantly pushing the limits of whatever it is you have been doing the last time. Not because you need to, but because you can.

See you next year, and thanks for making evoke happen.

I'm extremely sorry for that and it still hurts, but that's not the evoke peoples fault, blame that one me. And I'm really really sorry for it >_<

When the new tables were announced before the party I was something like "what the fuck! why new tables? replace those horrible chairs please". Please... These chairs are horrible if you have to spent more than 5 minutes on them.

who needs invitation for a cancelled party anyway? :D

We just need to make truck make more of the chairs break during compos, then we will maybe get new ones!
i wonder if there are some proper live captures from the compos. anyone knows something about that?

I agree that placing Jerobeam Fenderson (the oscilloscope guy) after the democompo was a mistake, and I am to blame for havnig misjudged his set in advance. It was really awesome technically, and we should have given him a mainstage slot in the afternoon so that everyone could have appreciated the awesome visuals. But I agree that it was a bit of a mood-killer after the compos, simply because of the timing. Next time will be different.

Thanks.

@dipswitch, 20/20 hindsight and all that. :)
well, there was the illegal rave at the end of the fence if you really wanted to dance after the compos!
While some people might already be making plans for Evoke 2015, here are two new sets of pictures from Evoke 2014 - thanks IndustrialPope and ted!
