Great GUS-only demos
category: offtopic [glöplog]
6.7? I believe I have 6.53, but I will have to check. The Trident card I think has like 2 or 4MB. It has the RAM sockets maxed out *shrugs*.
The old 5.3 might work better, who knows. I also have a TSR called vbeplus that creates VESA modes that don't exist on your card from other modes, but it didn't seem to do anything on mine.
By request, here we have the most exiting BBS nfo ever:
I also have a "demo" for this board by the same guys (which looks suspiciously like Quickbasic.) Two screens and a random spazzing background colour. Tempted to upload somewhere.

Here's another strange "alternative" demo I like. Not gonna blow you away with effects but it's interesting to watch, more like an art film.
Complex - The Message from the Cosmic Brothers
It was essentially Jmagic & Jugi trolling the "no animations!!" crowd at Assembly. But they made a pretty good prod in doing so. :D

@jmph: upload dat demo free glops son.
@jmph: Cosmic Brothers rules. I saw Dope and XTAL before, but not this one. I really like those video-demos especially if they're on the "alternative" style. They all kind of remind me of independent films or home movies. Amanaman is one that I really like.
Any other cool ones you can think of?

Triton made the GUS demo and Crystal Dreams II, didn't see them mentioned.
Honestly, CD2 and the original GUS AD Demo by Triton don't really do it for me. Maybe it was cool at the time but I feel like there is a lot more stuff from the 90s supporting GUS that showed off artistic and coding abilties way more than those two demos.
Also don't care for 2nd Reality.

Such as?
Pretty much half the stuff we've been discussing here like: Pager-11, Secret Life of Mr Black, Sea of Robot Love, Coma Control, Amanaman, Bjoer, and so on.
Granted, they were written later and it is only an opinion. But, I feel like the early 90s stuff is very cheesy. I feel like they lacked style and was more to show off "hey look a 386 CAN do 3d effects in real time!" The Triton is interesting as a historical note and a nice touch for playing a different song each time but the effects didn't wow me all that much. 2nd Reality will just never do it for me, way too dated for my tastes. The mid-late 90s demos seem to be more about artistic stylings and not just extreme coding abilities.

post-note: either way, props for history getting to where it is now, etc. etc. I don't want to say it's all garbage... I mean people spent legitimate time and effort into them but they just aren't my style and I feel they didn't age very well.
Vanility by Byterapers, 2010. Why not?
Is the version SB aware? Because it's only outputting from my Sound Blaster clone for some reason. Even if I remove BLASTER.

Arguably because that was the game at hand for the PC scene back in the nineties. I guess you had to be around to appreciate that.

Irony has it that the GUS played an increasingly minor role when that happened.

I know by the time the Pentiums came out it that the GUS was an irrelevant thing but it was still widely supported by the scene. I am not sure if it was just easier to program for or everyone was just used to it from the early 90s. Either way I was looking for demos that supported the GUS.
Back to my bitchin' and shittin' on early 90s... any other stuff off the top of your head that had high quality samples comparable to Success - Puker or Smegma. Leave those 256KB GUS users in the dusttttttttttttttt get 1MB or get out >:D
Hey, I was able to rip the song out of Great Lovemachine Pope by TPOLM. I think I ripped it properly, just ran UNP.EXE on the main binary to remove compression and found the SCRM and copied it over, but if theres extra data I left over someone let me know.

No need to check I suppose since CMOD will tell you how much it's supposed to be using and I trimmed it appropriately and during this I was also able to extract the second tracker:
