Great GUS-only demos

OT: But I've heard a lot about the 16MB hack, but I have not found a textfile on it anywhere. Can anyone link to one? Curious on what has to be done for those cards.

I believe the hack involved soldering two extra SIMM slots onto the card. I have no idea where you were supposed to put them...

Supposedly the Interwave chip supported 16MB of memory, but only 4MB/ea SIMMs so you needed four of them to fill it out. I suspect vastly more people talked about this hack than ever did it.

I always figured there was a textfile about it, but do you just solder more dimms from the traces of the dimms on the board? I didn't know if it all just runs in parallel like that which would be relatively easy in theory to solder but probably half a day to actually do it with all the wires running off it and double checking your work.

I have a Gus PnP with the extra SIMM slots hack. I'll see if I can find it and take some pictures.

I suspect the extra sockets would be all in parallel with the existing ones, except for the #RAS signals, which would be separate for each socket.. at least if it's wired as traditional random access..
Someone sent me a link how to turn it into 16MB: http://web.archive.org/web/20050110215352/http://tik.cs.hut.fi/~jhuuhtan/sub/16mbgus.html

Back to the top on great GUS-only demos and back-off topic... I really liked the Success stuff. The songs HQN did with Success are pretty good IMO, especially the ones for Puker, Smegma and x96 Party Intro #2 (X-FILE2.ZIP).

Is he still active in the scene? It appears he was in the band Toadstool or am I wrong on this? Any other songs I can find, etc. etc.

Pouet fubar'd your link. fixed
Also where dat love for COMA - Amanaman, TPOLM - Kocmoc, TPOLM - Bjoer and all other things TPOLM?

I think Amanaman is some pretty slick underrated stuff. Not insane effects, but very cool style and high quality samples with some good use of stereo. COMA's Control and Paimen are also worth seeing too but what is the deal with the overnormalized audio on both of those demos? The bass really oversaturates everything else.

I remember I was blown away by this at mekka/symp'97

HQN has been idling for a long time.

As for more tracks: I do remember he did a track for Cheese diskmag back in 1997, not sure which one though.

Hell yes, Pager-11, http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=446, is badass. Excellent music and very hypnotic.

I think a large chunk of PC demos from the mid-90's onwards were GUS only and life was drab if you were into demos and only had a Soundblaster :)
Things only changed when Windows 95 took off, as GUS drivers for it never really worked properly.

Exocet: it's sad that the win95 really killed the GUS card. Gravis took forever to get out any "working" drivers and then DirectSound started becoming more important for newer Win95 titles and everyone about jumped ship after those shitty beta drivers came out.

not exactly "GUS-only".
Oops.

Don't care for CD2 anyways (is that blasphemy?)

What blasphemy!

I think it's too dated in a non-charming way.

Blind 64k intro by Eufrosyne.
It actually can play the music on SoundBlaster, but... err... ok, you must hear it :)

Blind is pretty sweet. I also saw there was a comment about a blog post of other "forgotten" demos from the same time period. Most were pretty cool. Thanks!

Okay, I've definitely never tried that one in "SB" mode before. I just about fell off my chair laughing. Thanks for that.

Here's a nice oldschool one:
Prime - Airframe - Great voxels and 2nd Reality-ish 3D city in 64k. Really well done for the time.

Back when I had my 486 with only a 130 MB HDD and no GUS, I tended to delete the demos I got that turned out to be GUS-only. But I distinctly remember Airframe was one I kept around & enjoyed 'silently'. It may have been the first thing I played when I finally did get a GUS.

(Fun fact: the copy on my HDD now is still the one I downloaded from a local BBS back in the mid-'90s - it still has the BBS text file in the dir! I have moved across the world three times and gone through many new computers including two entirely new DOS machines since then.)

Can you post the bbs ad for shits and giggles?

Also, from that list: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=1400
This particular demo will not run right to save my life on any of the three DOS machines I own. One has a Trident PCI card in it that will allow VBE 2.0 and LFB with UNIVBE and runs almost any demo under those condtions... except this one will bitch about no LFB. Another PC has V5 5500 AGP in it and it will run the demo but there is a lot of missing scenes where the screen is black and music continues to play then at some point a scene will creep up here and there. The other is a V3 3000 AGP and same issues. What card did these guys even test this demo out on? I saw a comment where someone said it was a pain to get running and I'm not interested in emulating it.

I also should revise the title of this thread. What I really mean to say was demos that ran better with the GUS or were really designed around it. There quite a few demos that supported the SB as well but it's performance and/or sound quality was not guaranteed under these conditions.

Another nice 64k: Chrysalis - Azoic 'Discovered' this one recently. Great music, great software 3D engine (for 1999) - probably needs at a P5 and a decent gfx card though.

Pandemic runs on mine, but I get the black screens in some parts too. 4MB S3 Virge DX with Univbe 6.7 loaded. It didn't run at all with the onboard 1MB Chips & Technologies 65556 video.

Will post up the BBS txt shortly :D
