Evoke 2014 - August 8 - 10 in cologne/köln

category: parties [glöplog]
FeN: It clearly says the 10K EUR are the overall sum for all the compos

which is still bullshit...

The article at ksta.de is absolutely wrong in some points. The author talked to me at Evoke but she clearly was in a hurry and mixed things up... Also she did not send the article for review upfront - which normally is not a problem, but in this case it is. That's probably my fault, I could have sensed that she will miss some important details :/

I already told her to update the article. Because 10k prize money is, as most people know, complete bullshit. And because Evoke is clearly NOT a gaming event.

I don't really like the article, it's written too much from a distance, not getting close to the scene, not telling the stories that really are worth telling. Such articles are worthless for the demoscene.

But I hope for better articles to come at Kölnische Rundschau and the magazine of the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW.

If it was that clear, people wouldn't misread it. The horrible relative sentence also made me assume at first that the best presentation is awarded 10k.

Slider: you are wrong.

I stand corrected, in any case I would say those active scans won't saturate the band.

Well, technically this is what might really have happened, given that the Poo-Brain guys spilled lots of alcohol over their heads when they were too drunk to aim at their mouth ;)

...riiiight.

Why should you tweet something like this? Did you guys even read that article before spreading it further via @evoke_eu on twitter?

Even favorited/retweeted by avatar and retweeted by @digitalekultur, seriously? You've got to be kidding me.

Faving/retweeting without actually reading isn't really an uncommon practice, not only in the demoscene

funny how coverage of geek events always seems to be given to the crappiest reporters. Science fiction conventions get the same crap. One of our rules for reporters at the world science fiction convention was that any press onsite always had a minder. Having been that minder in several cases, I can say that it was likely quite awesome that I managed to stand in front of some furry art that was part of one display so they didn't see it and go apeshit they way they do. So too, scheduling is majorly good. And if they pull things and show up at funny times to be manipulative or because they are flakes . . . there are ways around that too.

But man guys, this sucks. So sorry to hear it.
Well, maybe next time have something prepared which reporters who don't really care can just copy? Would have saved her some work and us some trouble :)

To spread the word (and people often don't check if that word is worth spreading)

Now Demoparties need dedicated social media managers \o/ What a time to be alive.

No, what we need are community managers!
Btw. was there some kind of scenesat screwup? Evoke 2014 day 2 part 3 seems to be partially broken - e.g. try "mercury - hologram" at 5:00:06.

las: yes, that thing is called a press release. They can also be good for stimulating coverage . . . I've done them for @party, but they generally get ignored and folks interview me instead. I've been very fortunate in the folks who have reported on us; being a small event likely helped. One up side . . . sigh.

Good point, I will try to prepare a smooth pr-report for next year's Evoke. Then I'll just have to fill in the actual data like number of entries, correct sum of prize money and visitors, etc... and I can send it out as soon as prize giving is done. Maybe the KStA-author in question would have been open to this procedure.

But: Most journalists I know want to do the work themselves to show and maintain their independence. They research, they interview, they assess the different aspects, they decide what they write - and what not. And that's a real good thing! But this time... it wasn't :/

Thanks metoikos, it really sucks big time! The article's view on Evoke is not what we as the organizers want to read in the press. An neither do other demosceners.

I've made the same experience over the last years. The press release (here's ours for 2014 (PDF, German)) get's more or less ignored and mostly works as a trigger only to pull press to the event. The real work starts here. Interviews, photos, explaining, paying a round of drinks, more explaining...

Well, most of the time this works out just fine. This last article at KStA is not representative, we've had better ones, this one is a "negative peak".

I use "favorites" as bookmarks. So whenever I favorite something it's because I want to pick it up later (a link to a long article I didn't have time to read when I saw it, something I might want to buy, a video that looked interesting, vinyl I want to order etc. etc.)

I might also retweet stuff I find completely moronic, because I want the idiocy exposed to a greater audience. Retweets aren't necessarily endorsements, just a way of sharing something.

Small update regarding the KStA issue:

I just had a talk with one of the editors of KStA Online (not the author of the article). She immediately changed the captions for both photos from "gaming blah" to "Festival Evoke blah". That's part one.

Part two: She changed the prize money mis-information from 10k to 3k - which is correct. But the text still reads like 3k would go to every first place in different compos - which is completely wrong...

I'm working on it and will try hard to make them update this soon.

Btw, the article was published online only, no print. This time that's quite ok, I believe. And in a couple of days or weeks it will probably disappear behind their paywall - which would be absolutely okay, too.

But let me show a better press report about Evoke ;) As you might have noticed the local TV station Center TV sent a guy to our party. His report got aired Monday evening and is now available online: Check 'Rheinzeit' from August 11th, starting 07:40min (in German)

I'm not sure if my comparison with graffiti stuff is accurate enough - but at least nero^bauknecht said some good stuff ;) Thanks for doing that interview, nero!
