Gravis UltraSound For Sale?

category: offtopic [glöplog]
I've discussed some GUS on here in the past, but I am wondering who has any extra ones they would be willing to part with. Any of the accessories (like the 16-bit daughterboard or MIDI box) and even the clones I am interested in.

Specifically, I am looking for a GUS Classic v3.74 (final revision with the mixer) and any WORKING GUS MAX.

Should have restated, at prices for the people. Not extreme collectors prices. That thing would be worth that price if it had the original box and all the literature.

It's indeed a bit expensive. :)

Well, the two GUS' I own now I picked up for about $60 USD a piece a couple of years ago. I was thinking maybe $100 USD for a known working and tested GUS MAX. Last year, I spent about $80 USD when one showed up on ebay and it was DOA. Luckily the money was refunded to me, but I was really bummed as I've been trying to get one for years.

I was able to revive a dead GUS that I had by swapping the GF1 IC from the dead MAX so it wasn't a total loss.

I was fairly happy picking up 2 clones for 5 euros a few years ago. Old PC Hardware going up and up in prices :(

@Maraakate:
Hello, I happen to have a GUS Max that I'd like to sell.
I didn't put on ebay, I would be happier to sell it to a fellow demoscener.
If you want it, it's yours :) contact me by email : florent (dot) cure (at) gmail (dot) com

The prices are really going up and up now in the USA because in most states its actually illegal to put the computer out on the street for trash pickup. You have to take it to a recycle center where they mostly just melt it down for the gold contents on the pins.

I've been hoarding boxes full of old RAM, 386, 486, Socket 7 processors, etc. It's all getting really hard to find /decent/ motherboards for these types of computers too.

Also, thank you flure for your offer. E-mail sent!

Also, where did you find these clones? I've been looking for a few years to find any of them. I am assuming they were easier to find in Europe than in USA? I've never seen them show up on ebay, but admittedly I would check on occasion. I've still been looking to find one of those prima ultrasound clones or the GUS Extreme. The GUS Extreme almost sounds mythical in it's existence. I've only ever found one person who owns it and they are unwilling to part with it since they got it for free.

Picked up my clones in the Netherlands. I recall seeing similar gus clones in stores, dunno maybe Europe had more manufacturers.

@superplek: what's your right price?

@Harekiet: it must be. I have never seen one in the states. To be honest, I've only ever seen the Classic and one Max pop up a small handful of times in the USA. Most of them seem to come out of Hungary, Russia, NL, and so on.

It's funny, I was reading some old usenet posts around 1996-1999 and back then people were practically giving them away because the windows 95 drivers sucked and offered no directsound support. One other annoying flaw of the older revision classics is no hardware mixer. On the other hand, I've been told the hardware mixer is fairly noisey... Similar to the earlier SB16s and Pros. I know my SB16 can pick up HDD noise and lowering the volume from PC SPEAKER helps.

Also, your one clone looks like a GUS MAX clone. Does it function exactly the same? Does it detect and take advantage of the Codec? What brand is it?

I sold mine when I realised I'd probably never again have a machine with an ISA slot :(

I had an Altrasound gus clone and it behaved literally like a Gus Classic. It was p. Cool. Gave it away to Shifter who collects gusses though.

Hard to say. I might be willing to trade it for some piece retro hardware?

Think it's an Synergy ViperMAX and an Primax SoundStorm Wave SOUND-M16C
Both are just ultrasound classic clones. Work fine in DOS and that's all that really matters since there's just a soundblaster next to it for regular stuff.

@superplek: I am located in USA, but do have quite a bit of random retro hardware. One nice thing someone might be interested in is a Turtle Beach Tahiti and Rio Daughterboard. The daughterboard is a prototype that has some hand solder fixes on it. I have a friend who worked for Turtle Beach in the early 90s and gave me this hardware. The daughterboard is waveblaster compliant and sounds quite nice on cards that support it.

I do have various old processors, RAM, etc. No motherboards to give out though.

I have two Ultrasoun MAX rev 1.8.
No idea if they're still working, I haven't used them since, errrr, 20 years maybe...
Let me know if you want 'em.
