Facebook buys Oculus VR
category: offtopic [glöplog]
fuck facebook.
They might shit everything up, they might not. I'm hoping not, although I'm not overly confident. Maybe Oculus was in a tight spot funding wise and needed someone with deep pockets to step in.
If key staff start leaving, you'll know it's fucked. Until then, fingers crossed.
Anyone been coding any demos for the thing?

I actually think it's a good thing -- Facebook won't integrate this into it's product, it's more of a good investment that needs tech savvy investor.
What *does* piss me off is the fact that I was a kickstarter. We raised 10x what they wanted, and now it appears to have all been so that they can look better for an eventual buyout. I wish they'd consulted some of the community (yes, I know that's not how it works) -- I wish they'd had a first public release before they sought investment from third party investment.
At $2 billion, that a lot of units they need to sell to break even. Those of us that invested $2.5 million are essentially snubbed.

"According to a person involved in the deal who was not allowed to speak publicly because he was not authorized by either company, Facebook eventually plans to redesign the Oculus hardware and rebrand it with a Facebook interface and logo."

No. We are all entitled to a million times more than we currently get.
Another thing the cartel office missed to notice. Wonder what these guys are doing all day...
Fuck crowdfunding and then taking facebook's cash, too. Wtf.
Would someone please explain to me what's wrong with crowdfunding and then accepting a buyout for your company? It's not like you own a shares of the company or anything when you back something on Kickstarter and as far as I know, people did get their rewards which was what they paid for.
It's interesting that Facebook has so low trust anymore in communities.
It's good. Paves the way for a replacement.

this pretty much sums it up:

There´s still Avegant Glyph, which projects the image directly onto your retina! Way better approach if you ask me! ;)
Oculus Rift is dead for me! Does not exist anymore!

Meh. It's still the same product as it was 3 days ago.

wtf. what's gonna change? right now it's just some investor to keep this rolling. what can facebook do with it? tho... we all know the science fiction. they might want augmented 3d social media next? doesn't google have that glasses already?
they not gonna suck me into that. :)

fuck facebook +1 :)
(gargaj: note I didnt use "fecesbook")
it's not "just an investor", they now call the shots on what the product will or will not be.
and that translates into only people that will be developing games for social media will ever get to do anything cool with the technology.
which sucks because it has a lot more potential for a lot of other applications.
i hope i'll be proven wrong.

i think the oculust rift technology is open and spread enough so that facebook cant control the development of software for it. they would also be pretty stupid to artificially limit the support for the oculus, no matter if it immediately grants them money or not.
what i can understand tho is that the original kickstarter backers feel a bit cheated because they wanted to support a small and dedicated team with a great idea instead of throwing a couple of coins on suckerbergs empire...

yes and then the small, young and dedicated team said "thanks for making this possible but we now take the big moneys and make sure what you want is much less important than what facebook wants. thanks again!"
Where did they say that?
I'm very entertained by all the butt hurt nerds that don't seem to understand what kickstarter does and how companies work.
