Oldschool demos getting vendor locked?

category: general [glöplog]
cant we just all agree that the scene needs more productions for BeOS and OS/2?

what marq said.

Scali: if "serious development" was only happening on the most popular platform then there would be no other platforms. and yet, they exist and are thriving. curiously enough your definition of "serious development" seems to be exploring the limits of state of the art graphics cards on pc to make triple a games. if all you care to play are triple a games and all you can "seriously develop" is fancy 3d acc graphics, that's fine and dandy for you and whoever else rides that boat, but don't go pidgeonholing the whole gaming industry and "serious development" into your bowl of windows oatmeal.

there is no disputing windows is the most popular platform, and there is a reason for that. but that doesn't mean other folks aren't doing "serious development" elsewhere. would be nice if you wouldn't be taking the piss at them for doing what they like where they like.

I'd say with the stuff you've posted here (publicly and forever) the foot is actually sticking out of the other end by now ;)

scali only seriously develops a demo every 10 years. even linux users have a higher productivity than that.. and their content creation toolkit even sucks donkeycocks so that's quite an achievement! :P
Aaaaaannnnddddd, Maali is in the house everyone!

aye, and i have more demos on my CV than all main contributors to this thread combined. so stop wasting my serious development time with your utter ignorance ;)
@psonice, on the topic of keyboard/non keyboard driven programming language...

As you say, we'll see... Although i'm still not convinced that we can always get rid of the keyboard as input! I've not tried scratch, but i heard bad things about it. Here's nonetheless some links to give some water to your watermill:

This is how you debug visually on the C64 :)

baah: i doubt we'll get rid of the keyboard, we'll still need to enter numbers, name stuff, or put labels with text in them on stuff. But coding on a touchscreen would be a lot more viable if it wasn't 'keyboard-oriented', i.e. we need the keyboard only for a few things, not nearly all of them.

I'm just looking at the code i've been writing this afternoon (obj-c stuff for an iPhone UI), and I'd say it could be easily represented in a visual way. With a good UI that could be faster than typing it, and a lot more intuitive. But then there's also a bunch of C code in there that would be a lot harder (somehow object oriented stuff seems a lot more suitable for non-keyboard coding).

Thanks for the links though, I'll take a look at those. :)

Oh wow. I believe you just made this thread actually worthwhile :)

now this is completely done I have two things

one.. someone (i've just been back through and can't find it) mentioned that some stuff runs ok in the emulator, but not on real HW.

in my eyes, the emulator is then wrong for not being accurate enough.

compo rules should state real HW vs emulator?

two.. with all the talk about different SID chips, its also made me wonder what particular paraphernalia from c64/amiga days is sought after? nothing too 'out there', its just I frequent whats called a 'car boot' sales here in the UK as I have a bit of capital put aside to play with and I buy and sell/refurb guitars for fun. I do see consoles (SNES/N64 most commonly( and the odd old home computer. I had an Amiga 500 OCS myself so know about that world a bit, but not the c64 side.

Obviously the environment i'm getting them from they're untestable, so whats a good value on what might end up just being a donor for someone?

psonice: you can dictate your code to Siri! ;)
maali: just tried, got a popup "downloading enhanced dictation, 5 minutes remaining" :(

This thread could have been handled in answering with just one demo:
Kewlers - 1995
( IF you try to grasp what the lyrics try to tell you! Maybe hard if you havent been there back then!)

Demoscene is not about getting famous or anything...it´s about doing what you love to do! And making what you love in a team brings good results in anything you try to do!

Demomaking is about demomaking, about having fun exploring the possibilities of a given machine, where the outcome isn´t the goal in the first place. It´s an artistic approach to Life itself, which in my way of thinking about Life is the only way to go!

Most people think Life is just about reproducing in the end! (getting married and having 2++ (= 0++) children, as leaving the world together (dying, both elders) with just one child (= -1) or two (= 0) is not in that plan, you have to leave the world with a plus!, whomever invented it! ->Damn Bitch named Nature! :/ )

As a Demomaker, be you musician, graphician or coder, you only exist to make something awesome out of the little that is given to you!
If you don´t do it for the fun it provides you, you are doing it wrong, choose to live different then! :p
Demomaking is a hobby, we do it in our precious sparetime, we provide the outcomes for free and we don´t do so to get fame at all! ;)
That said, the chosen platform is just the sort of fun you want to challenge next, as in "which rollercoaster do i try next?" in rollerCoasterLand! ;)

Ofcourse most of what others said before applies aswell!

Le Consense of this TrollPost should be, that you can choose whatever you want to do in your Life and should just do that, Life´s short, so donot waste it on trying to get famous...especially not if you dont have fun at it while doing so! ;)
You should do what you always loved to do and try to get proficient in that field, earning money with it! (NAH, dont do so, you´ll kill your hobby! Try choosing sth close to it instead!)

People that have brains do live their lifes different, getting called nerds or even geeks! What people insulting them this way are missing is that those people are way ahead of them concerning having realized what Life is about nowadays! ;)

oldskool platforms keep cumming prods
The PC will die. Not because of tablets. But because of oldschool platforms. Wishful thinking.

Hello fellow demo makers (not that I've made any demos - still working on it)

One thing that has been kinda curiousing me out about you l33t h4x0rz that make demo for totally oldschool retro retro machines: Aren't you a bit bummed out that your work is being tied to a platform no longer commercially manufactured? That many people can't even experience your demos on real hardware since they don't have access to it?

I totally get the appeal of these restricting platforms, and the possibilities when targeting fixed hardware. But I would want people to actually see my wonderful creations, which means supporting mainstream platforms? Not necrophiling around with retro hardware.

Oh, and sorry if this topic has been up before.

Retro platforms are wonderful sandboxes where you can test the limits of yourself and the machine. See it as a normal size-limited category, except that it's also performance-limited so that you have to code Assembly and use the hardware directly. It's a *really* good challenge, and fun :)

If you can't buy one of the 10-20 most common retro platforms in 5 minutes, you haven't bothered to look, I think ;)

Also, we're working on the buy a newly manufactured retro computer bit. C64 Reloaded is here, A1200 is next, and there are others coming... Also, flash card and network interfaces have popped up for various platforms, increasing usability. Computer case Kickstarters, etc, etc.

I think it's rather the case that you have to be utterly uninterested in retro computers to miss all that has been happening :)
