Random F*cking Good Reads.

I myself hate "Action", while Terminator was a good movie, i hated them Boom-Parts!
Quote:
why is it that most demosceners *seem* to be mostly interested in reading Science Fiction and/or Fantasy books?

Geeks/Nerds have those extraSynapses, allowing them to see how life could be different to what life is nowadays on Earth....or not!, thats why we have to use them synapses everyone has and try to accumulate them with SF/F! ;)

But ok, here´s the best read i ever had: (not that fancy considering the author is overrated and way too wellknown!)
wikipedia about The Stand
Don´t ever dare to watch the stupid movie, this Thread is about READs ;)
The movie sucks donkey´s balls....get the full read, weighing in at ~1150 pages and have a blast at antiFlat_chars and deCliche´d_dialogues! ;) Best Read ever, period!
@CrossProduct - I agree with garg (!inorite!), there is a level of escapism. Personally I think it's also a bit about tech - a lot of the stuff we use now was stuff that was written about in sci-fi in the 50's and 60's (when I cba I'll dig up examples) and I think many of us read "modern sci-fi" and enjoy the imaginings of tech and lifestyle to come - I'm thinking of the Culture from Iain M. Banks and a lot of that type of thing.

make level=dungeon and bit=MegaByte.

There wouldn´t be anything named demoscene without fiction and science having enabled us to type on sth as strange as the internet nowadays!
SF is about stuff that is possible, thanks to Einsteins calculations...
...but that stuff is also notReachable in our lifeTime, so we have to read about it instead of living it! ;) :/ :( :( :(
F is about stuff that isn´t possible, but could have been, so atleast our ancestors could have had a friend named gollum! ;)
Fantasy, for real, is all up to you, what to make with yours! ;) You could even turn your fantasies into reality, if they aren´t too abstract and you dont miss the abilities to do so! :)
(Learn then, stupid humanoid!)
On a tangent - any other book hoarders out there. I don't just mean just holding onto books (I've got literally hundreds of lineal metres of bookshelves - some 2-3 books deep!) but you hold onto a good book to re and reread. I started "Mindstar Rising" by Peter F. Hamilton and "A Question of Blood" by Ian Rankin - both of which I've read more than once.
My wife pointed out to me that I've got new and unread books by both authors on the shelves next to our bed. But I want to hold onto reading them for a time when I can truly savor the read (makes me sound like a wanky gourmand...).
Any others like that? Or am I just like my missus tells me "fucking weird, dude!"

I joined up goodreads. If you can't beat 'em right?
2 books came up that I wanted to reread I quite happily found on my shelves (after a little searching). I think hArDy and Batroshe really need to read "The Food of The Gods" by Terrance McKenna and I'm gonna reread "The Way of The Peaceful Warrior" by Dan Millman. Now I know it looks like a self-help book, walks like a self-help book & talks like a self-help book. But it's not, no ducks here. Trust me when I say - it's an easy read, it's not "preachy" at all and it certainly made me think about a lot of stuff when I first read it 20 odd years ago.

I have actually read The Stand, full version, exactly a year ago. It was my first Stephen King and I was very reluctant but decided to give it a try. And I tried to read it with an open mind.

In my opinion it was quite bad. The story just did not go anywhere really and the characters are flat as cardboard. One good thing that can be said is that it all reads pretty easy and fast.

I find it telling that the movies I like based on Stephen King books are usually rejected by King himself! A good example is The Shining by Kubrick. That movie I like a lot but it was rejected by the author. He made his own miniseries and it is garbage.

Actually, one of the few books that I enjoyed in this "horror" genre is: House of Leaves

Anyone read it? It kind of appealed to a more deep fear, for me, than The Stand. While it is actually not even a very scary story by itself.

I haven't read much Stephen King. I liked the Gunslinger series and my missus pointed me to "The Eyes of the Dragon" which I have to say is quite unlike anything else he's written.
TV wise I do agree - the Langoliers is one of my faves and also one of the few where we couldn't play our favorite game - spot the authors cameo. ;] I didn't mind Kingdom Hospital tho - if you've watched any American Horror you may recognise the premise and some of the themes.

haven't read much stephen king myself, despite being a big reference, only remember reading dreamcatcher and it was pretty good, avoided the movie like the plague.
