Killing Sharks.
category: residue [glöplog]
Now I'm not a demoscener. I code occasionally and it was my interest in win32asm that brought me here originally.
This post has [b]NOTHING[\b] to do with the demoscene.
In the same way that there can be posts here about "Climbing Sceners" and hidden cat threads I believe that this post needs to seen here and maybe discussed beyond here.
Anyhoo - my local government has decided that due to a number of shark incidents involving surfers and divers on our South West Coast that they are going to allow commercial fishermen to drop baited drum lines in order to capture and kill sharks (supposedly only those over 3m).
Now there have been some "shark attacks" here in Western Australia. Let's look at some explanations for a start.
Every summer there are annual whale migrations. Being summer in the southern hemisphere it's also seal breeding season.
Our south western coast is heavily over fished - to the point that the govt. not only mandates commercial fishing licenses but also recreational fishing licenses. Including over fishing of sharks ironically.
Unsurprisingly sharks have recently attacked humans inshore over prey in deeper water.
Let's be clear here - we are apex hunters.
On land.
In the ocean we aren't. Despite the fact that we kill hundreds of thousands of sharks every years for soup, fish and chips and aphrodisiacs, make no mistakes, like Jaws did it - once you step into the realm of the lamniformes and other orders of sharks you are just another type of prey. As swimmers, divers and surfers we are intruders into their domain. Apparently we look similar to other prey but are relatively easy to catch and eat. Is that their 'fault'?
It doesn't surprise me that there are quite a few shark attack 'victims' that are quite outspoken about this in support of not culling sharks.
I'll leave you with a few links to online petitions. If you believe that a wild animal shouldn't be killed simply because some of it's species has attacked humans in it's own hunting grounds then feel free to sign up.

Oh. Maali. Well played, golf clap and all that. Now sign up before you get hooked into it.

i dont like sharks. kill them all, i'd say.
same goes for wasps. we should start to assemble wasp kill squads now!
oh and jellyfish. they need a shot in the head too!

and we should train red pandas how to swim, so they can replace the killed sharks. they are much cuter and friendlier to work with!

It might sound slightly too cynical to ask, but did change.org ever actually achieve anything?
When I'm in Florida I always fish for sharks, then I eat them because I'm a apex hunters! I'm not signing anything.

Love to prove that, wouldn't ya? Get your name into the National Geographic.

It's absolutely nuts.
But almost all our behaviour towards our fellow earthlings is pretty depressing.

@Forcer - next time you go fishing try this technique for me.
1) Chum up the water good and proper - lots of blood, guts and fish bits.
2) Jump in and have a swim. Make sure you thrash around a lot a bit like say umm... an injured seal or something.
3) Rinse and Repeat.
You'll be fine m8, you're an apex hunter. ;P
@Garg - probably not but we aren't exactly going to start rioting in the streets over this now are we.
@uncle-x - *wails* Won't somebody think of the henchmen!

Nah, that wouldn't work but I could use you as a bait :]
^ Apex-troll sounds pretty damn tough standing there on the deck of his boat with his rod in his hands.

even worse than sharknado, i can really recommend it!
Q: Why do sharks live in the ocean and not the sky
A: The sky is Jet territory
Q: what was the nerd shark's favorite programming language
A: jaw-va
Q: What was the shark jazz musician's favorite illegal substance?
A: Reefer!
Q: What do British sharks like to eat?
A: Fish and kids!
Q: What was the shark's favorite Pixar movie?
A: Eating Nemo
Q: What do cat sharks cough up?
A: Human balls.
Q: What would they call a quarter pounder with cheese at a hypothetical McDonalds for sharks
A: a quarter flounder with cheese

I liked how Forcer was trying to come across as a big, internet hardman and threaten me.

From his website....
ringofyre: damn, right. I threatened you with a machete. I was actually so close of cutting your head off and feed sharks with it.
Anyway, I think you are taking this whole thing here too seriously.
