Where is the game?

Why in the category 96K games for windows last work dates from April 2010?
Why kkrieger remained a leader? This game released in 2004!
In my mind this genre not deservedly forgotten.

I'll be honest - gamecompos felt a lot more interesting when they were sizelimited to 96k.

But most gamedev compos in parties are unlimited.
For "unlimited" creativity I guess :)

The demoscene is primarily about demos and not about games. Alas, I guess many coders originally ventured into coding because they wanted to make games, or is my impression wrong? Since game development is also heavily dependent on graphics and music engineering the game industry serves as an employer for many demosceners.

Scene games, made for game compos at demo parties, are usually not even remotely comparable to commercial games. Obviously one would not want to waste technically sophisticated games for a compo at a demo party. This however enables beginners to participate in these compos and perhaps gain good places.

I actually am quite interested in scene games and like checking them out. Sometimes they are based on good ideas. For this reason I support the notion of hosting more game dev compos at demo parties.

it is because:
a) making games is boring if you do it for a living already
b) due to interactivity it is way more work than doing a demo with the same level of assets
c) challenge/reward from doing a good game vs a good demo doesnt weigh up. (prize money, compo status, general appraisal by sceners)
d) not many sceners bother to do games
e) try yourself to make something better than kkrieger, i'll see you back in 2023.

obviously outside the scene you can get a lot of egojerking when doing something really interesting, e.g. when kkrieger hit slashdot and kiddos all went OMG A DOOM3 CLONE SMALLER THAN A SASHA GREY JPG!!!!, but if that rocks your boat, there are better places to seek attention than game dev compos at demoparties.

It's not like a lot of gamemaker stuff won at recent parties... :-)
When your target platform is a console, games make sense. Somehow. 96k doesn't, you have a lot of overhead, your RAM is very limited, yadda yadda. And we're old and lazy.
