I think 4sceners is good as it is; it's a self-made initiative that stands just fine on its own. You may not agree with their decisions, but it's really up to them: they made it on their own and they have their own name riding on it.
anyone can pull a list of demos out of their ass. it's the process how and the entourage around it that makes it meaningful or not..

1000e in the prize fund (10e on everyone's ticket at a 100 person party) is just not the level of prestige you're talking about. by the time youve spread it across a couple of compos you have a democompo 1st prize of a few hundred e, which isnt exactly "prestige".
to get "prestige prizes" (a few k) at a 100 person demoparty youd need to put 100e on the ticket. thats just not cool.
Of course not, attendance would be down to the 10% fat cats who don't need to win prizes anyway defeating the whole idea. So why suggest such a figure in the first place?
My suggestion gives a way for medium sized parties to provide a cash prize or attractive piece of gear (or plaque or trophy, to further establish the party) at all. I just think the ticket prices can stand a gradual increment, and the attractiveness of the compos at those parties would increase gradually.
You "suggesting" impossibilities isn't really very constructive at all.
I've been a party organizer for a while now and I must say that in my experience, prizemoney is, although nice, never the real motivation behind making demos. We had excellent demos and all we gave as a prize was a bag of gummibears and an pat on the back. Sure we also had crappy years, but so do other parties with massive prizes.
I'd rather put the proposed "surplus" in entrance money towards features which enhance the overall experience of all visitors and not just the competing few.
Take for example the free coffee at tUM and Revision which we had for years now. Ok, at tUM it doesn't really cost us anything more than manpower, but at Revision it is indeed a substantial amount of money which we COULD have put into additional prizemoney but we decided otherwise and had a massively positive response which I doubt would have gotten if we had put 50 Euros more into each prizemoney envelope.

free coffee is MUCH MUCH better than some extra cash on the prizemonies. :)
exactly. a great party experience pushes more people to show up at all. more people -> bigger audience and more prospective competitors -> better compo -> more prestigious to enter and win. now that's an incentive that's way bigger than a few more euros in an envelope.

While Solskogen is not among the biggest parties in the world, it sure isn't one of the smallest either. Growing steadily from just 40+ people in 2002 to 155+ people in 2013, I can at least tell you that "fat prizes" isn't even on the back of the list of things we do to make sure people come back year after year. Our growth is based SOLELY on Making The Party Good And Enjoyable(tm).
Prizes makes sense if you have a large budget, or run a mixed event such as The Gathering or Assembly. For everyone else, just do something fun and cool instead, like the Function medals or even the Solskogen photobooks. Worth more than a few EUR IMO.

Maali: hardly, making a game is much more involved than making a demo especially if you are targetting more than one platform, its more of a job.
The main thing making money irrelevant too is that the average age of an active demoscener these days is much higher than the kids who used to compete a decade or two ago.. back then the prize money would have been a good earner and it would have been throw away money, these days we all got to pay the bills right?
btw. I think the awards were amazing for just the attendees of the party and not the people that got nominated, its a great way of educating people too that do not really have the technical knowledge to judge correctly. Of course the peoples choice also provided the opposite too. So, if there are juries involved in another award it really needs to involve the right people to make it a professional job imo.
Yes - as I said I feel the scene.org awards were a great idea. I of course dont think the right ones won every time, but if I did, the awards would suck too.
