Scene.org Awards discontinued

category: general [glöplog]
Would be nice to see things like Graphics, ASCII and Music compos getting some recognition. From what I can gather scene.org awards never bothered.

Thanks for the support everyone, we are really happy that you are all on board, and of course thankful for the constructive criticism with regards to the name, form and contents of the Award show. I strongly urge you to visit TRSAC and check out the events for yourself, or at least submit an entry and follow proceedings on SceneSat.

We are of course willing to compromise: would the description "rightful heir to the scene.org awards" be less offensive than the term "successor"? that would allow a pretender to rise to the challenge of our awesome awards show Unrightly so of course, but thats how it goes. We are also willing to name the awards something of your choosing. Right now they are called "Panties" but if you prefer "Okkies" or something else thats cool with us as well.

Wouldn't the "okkies" be the demsocene equivalent of the razzies?

I'd prefer lug00biers

I agree with h0f, I'd love to see best soundtrack, 3D rendered object, handdrawn and so on as well. It'd be neat to have best code, but I guess that's not doable :)

haha that's actually a neat idea

that guy. over there, with the hand optimized Amiga assembly. :D
There are contests where people do shape their code. I think there's a Perl module to help them do it, since the extra spaces required are mostly ignored. So if you wanted code that looked like an pear, you could.
wouldn't work, Blueberry or Kalms would always win the hand-optimized Amiga asm award

Sometimes you gotta end something to start a new era.
LUG00BERRIES

There has never been an outstanding contribution to the demoscene award. They used to have that every year and breakspoll!

djhoffman, you have a point there. but, as you have won several music compos, isn't a tad obvious WHY you want the awards to feature them? :)

also, don't make awards, make children!

also also, I will miss TRSAC for 1 week - bummer! - but those who are there come and see my show in Randers and Aarhus! 25th and 27th respectively </pub>

Jeenio, afaik a lot of danish demosceners are making more children these days than demos.

Also, where in Randers/Aarhus? - then we might!

About the children part, actually, DUB members have 4 kids incoming this autumn.

Four kids? I DID NOT APPROVE THIS!

Of course it cannot, nor will not, be "the successor", but new awards are always welcome :)

Why can't it be the successor? Does it need the gloom seal of approval? HM?

I once wanted to do the Okkies at outline and award 'the dude with the best sweater' and shit like that because award shows are silly.

Well im partly with Okkie on that one, theres enough circlejerking in the scene (especially in the "upper half" which is the likely target for nominations).

However, theres many very good productions out there that deserve more attention than the partycompo and a few weeks on pouet so giving them a platform to shine in restrospect is a good thing. This goes even more for the prods that arent on pouet (gfx, msx) so I would be very much for adding new categories for those.

I think in the end its about how the awards are done and how serious and "ambitious" it looks.
The scene.org awards were too blown up and Oscar-esque like for my taste but that doesnt mean it has to be like that with every award.

Oh btw, how about bringing back the scene.org "viewing tips"? They were my entry point in demos back in 2001ish and dont need a big jury or award structure behind them.

okkie: in order for something to be a successor it needs to be named as such by the preceding party. Since it isn't, it will never officially be the successor, nor affiliated with Scene.org (or the Scene.org Awards) in any way, that's all.

wysiwtf: they might be returning with the redesign, but until then: http://curio.displayhack.org/

I suppose if he was the guy who ran the show then yeah, he should have a say in that :)

how is the selection process of them dubwards anyway? my scepsis is that awards are nice and all, but are only meaningful if there is some form of authority behind it all. scene.org had an objective jury for example (not in for the discussion whether that construction was perfect). but getting that stuff done right is underestimated by many and a pain in the arse to actually organize.
