Scene.org Awards discontinued

I can help you get them to Seattle.
My opinion may not have much importance at this time, but smash's comment here about the discontinuation of the scene.org awards pushing the demoscene further back on itself ("[...] sinking below the tide mark of nostalgic / gimmicky / obscure / joke shit") really struck me.

I would hate to see this happen (a dip below the tide mark) and in fact my personal aim for the next year or so in demoscene terms is to actually push things forward. Whether I am capable remains to be seen.

The introduction of a replacement awards system is a fantastic thing, however I have to agree to some extent with las's sentiment that this is a little ill-conceived. For me, "scene.org awards" smacks of genuine achievement whilst "Danish Underpants Brigade" does not (yet). I hope I don't sound like a fun-killer by saying this.

While there is truth to it, maybe it'll grow into something more serious over time and we can just backronym DUB into Demoscene Upholding Board or something.

Well, in the end it's just an award. A superficial merit awarded by peers. In the meanwhile I'll leave the doomsayers drumming up another endless tirade of "help help, the demoscene is dying" and keep making demos instead, pushing forward the decomposing gasses from the corpse exquisite of a dying social structure around an art form still unsure about it's place in the realm of digital art.

TL;DR - it's just an award. Keep making demos.

We agree that DUB indeed does not smack of any kind of achievement apart from being Danish, in your underpants and being somehow formally organized (a brigade) :)

Stay tuned but for now I leave you with two points of wisdom:

- An Award show WILL happen at TRSAC

Side note: It's always about esteem for me, (fame/glory/respect of your peers etc), but I can't help but think even early-ish demoparties achieved some of the prestige through prize money (and through disk mags). I wouldn't mind a higher entry fee to raise that prize money; it's not the expensive part of going to a demoparty anyway.

well when you're 15 another 100e really matters. :) youd have to make the prizes pretty huge to achieve that for a bunch of middle aged sceners with decent jobs.

if the 1st prize for a democompo was 10k euros it might get interesting, but then the 200e entrance fee might people off going to the party.

Didn't Assembly have a 7000e first place prize in the democompo?
added on the 2013-10-07 16:15:58 by okkie okkie
okkie: it did. 4k for the regular prize money (same most years) and then 3k on top from some eu sponsorship of some kind. still, when its 6 people making the demo.. :)

(.. the point is that making demos is financially disasterous, prizes would have to be so huge to change this that its not worth talking about :) - so we'll all just have to keep making them for our own amusement value)

I'd love to live a life where 400 euro isn't that much.

In Finland you'll find a country where the 400 euros buys you two weeks worth of rent, if you live in a dump.

Aren't we getting sidetracked from the actual discussion here?

That's adorable. :)

And to get back on track: yeay! awards!
What really upsets me here is that actual scene.org awards could be resurrected but instead new one is starting and most likely makes it less likely. Hopefully it'll be revived next year.

Fingers crossed.

Oh and good luck with your own award show, dear danes )
