The only thing that really makes me flabbergasted in this thread is that shifter and nosfe goes iwith the "save the children" mob and skips away from the details.

how are you not done yet?
ok, it's a few days already and this dude (Analogue) hasn't shown any intention to give pouet back to their real owners and disappear from the map.

I sent an email to webmasters@pouet.net three days ago requesting they delete my account here (i don't want to be listed as a user of anything he feels he owns). No answers yet.

Is it legal to not be able to delete your account from a website you don't want to be registered at?

iq: i would say it depends on the terms of service of the site, which on pouet's case doesn't really exist. in 2000 it wasn't an issue, and we never got it up to date with the legislation. so, only a lawyer with expertise in that field can answer you honestly. my instinct tells me it's probably not legal in 2013.

iq: depends on what you mean by "delete"? If you mean delete all data behind the account, I'm not sure you are in a position to demand this, unless the data about you would be personal, like address, name, email, phone, social security number etc.

If nothing really personal or intimidating is stored, as in data which anyone could back trace to you, I guess you cannot claim it to be deleted.

But the again, if you where not properly informed about these issues when registering in the first place, I guess you can claim you data deleted, as is BE GONE from the db.

And then again, there are all these issues about this being a hobby forum and not an actual business site, so maybe a complete different set of rules apply here :)

why do i have a feeling i should be writting a scrapper to the whole site? -_-

The traditional way to "delete" a pouet account is to just rename it and change all info in user.php to some crap.

Want your comments and submissions deleted too? That's too bad, you should have thought about that before posting.

You can't blame anyone but yourself for joining a site with no terms of service.
account.php that is...
ps: The jurisdiction of what country applies to pouet.net?

Adok: dutch afaik

@iq: it seems Pouët is registered to a French owner, with a French address. So I assume the CNIL would have something to say if you can't delete your account. But I'm no lawyer at all.

(if you're curious: http://www.cnil.fr/?id=301)

@Zavie, IIRC it's not the domain that matters but the servers' actual location, so I suppose dutch law applies.

know I'm not the most legitimate to try to make a point about it, but legally we can't.
People added stuff to pouet knowing how their data would be displayed (comments on prod, bbs post in a thread, user profile), they never agreed to have their data dumped in a way that makes it easy to do whatever you want with it.

what if the database is sold to advertising companies for profiling say?

WTF?! legal issues, really? marketing companies interesting in ringos random women thread or what? you must be joking, this is THE LAMEST EXCUSE EVER to not dump the data. it's free on the internet anyways. for example archive.org has made copies of it and it's in the google cache. so WTF? everybody ALREADY can have access to all data he/she wants. also if you post anything here it should be totally clear that you are doing this in public, on a public site on the public internet?
this is no secret nsa intranet and no sensible medicine data. guys, make your mind up. atleast a dump on all prods with or without/comments should be perfectly legal. even with comments, since they're open anyway. it's not that anybody own copyright on their screenshots or sth.

also - what should marketing companies do with comments/posts of strangers they only know a nickname and no email and no name?! cause NOBODY asking to dump the user table or to disclose any personal data. marketing companies are harvesting facebook, there's the useful data. this is paranoia and or lame excuses.
your users are asking to make the data available - while retaining personal data of course. (correct me but every comment on not releasing the data was about personal data, which is reasonable)

v3nom: my point there wasn't that I'm worried about pouet selling my data to some company. It's just that there's a difference between what's published on the site being public, and handing over the complete (ish) database, and why the laws might be different.

In one case it's just a website that people are free to access, in the other the people running the site intentionally give all of the data to a 3rd party. If I publish a demo or a comment on the site, I'm clearly giving my permission for the site to publish it on the web. I'm not clearly giving my permission to hand it over to some 3rd party.

Not that I see any issue with publishing a database dump, but I can see why analogue might be very careful just now not to start another huge shit storm ;)

psonice, and how have you agreed or not agreed to anything? I checked a couple of the “Submit” links, and none of them mention anything about any restrictions on how the data you submit is used by the site which probably—again—means that the site owner now owns that data and can do with it whatever he wants.

if you submit a prod to pouet, you're just obviously agreeing to publish the data on the website. Are you agreeing that the site owns that data, or has the copyright to it? That's not clear, and there is no agreement we sign when we join the site or upload.

Unfortunately I think a court would have to decide who owns what, and I'm pretty sure nobody wants that to happen :D

psonice: well what about my sugesstion which i made on the other thread then?

here's a sane method: (all companies make it that way)
as you have the email-addresses of your users write them a mail, stating that the terms of use have changed and their posts will made available. then they have, lets say a month or two to opt-out instead if they don't agree with it. and make a announcement on the front-page too.
then wait - and voilá you have a perfectly legal way to make the data available. (from all users who doesn't disagree - (which will be <0,xxx%, i'm sure)

iq: perhaps a coordinated move from everyone who is pissed off by the site owner's attitude would be in order. as for me, i'm still waiting whether analogue comes to senses, apologises to gargaj and everyone else, and restores everything back to normal. if this does not happen in reasonable time, i would demand not the deletion of my account (who would care about that apart from myself?), but of all prods i have added over the past 12 years (~2500 prods, that's ~4% of the database). if others, especially those in the glöp top20, would share this intention, then we would really constitute a force.

@dipswitch: You want to destroy 12 years of your work, that pleased countless sceners (including you) only to make a point to the current situation?! I understand that you maybe are pissed off, but don't you think this is a bit harsh? And IF the situation clears and pouet would be given back to gargaj or someone else, then your 2500 prods are gone forever. Would it be worth it?

I think that the integrity of the database is more important than anything else. Destroying even parts of it for silly personal conflicts would be an extreme disservice to the scene at whole.

Speaking of preserving the database - I've added another pull-request for exporting bbs-topics including comments.

The prod exporter is still being questioned because of the dubious "private data" issue which doesn't really exist in this case since all exported data is already publicly available here on pouet without having to log in.
