ps: sure I have an opinion and clearly, pouet is not partymeister. PM is a tool you use once a year and couldn't care less about it in between.

Pouet is a LIVE website which means rules have to be even more strict and need an even more involved manager to control everything and make sure nothing breaks when updating the code on the server.

What I'm trying to convey is: as long as there is a conflict of interest about what should be done and how it should be done, there's not much point doing anything since it doesn't help anybody.

From what I know, development on pouet 2.0 was advancing slowly but steadily until today. You don't need to "open source" it for it to help with development. I've exchanged thoughts about pouet 2.0 with gargaj for months and I agreed to help with development once it's in a state where it makes sense.

wysiwtf: Sure I believe in OSS. I couldn't do much work without it. What I don't believe is the fairytale version of it which is propagated here.

Tell me - what do YOU personally have to gain from an open sourced pouet. Would you actively help with development? Or would you just sit back in your chair, sip whisky, pet your cat and be all like "Ah pouet is OSS now - our job is done!"?

DFox: I'd contribute when I have some time, and some others too, if we could.
Right now, and since 1+ year I can't (I can technically) because Gargaj is working on v2.

Mediation is occurring, and potential progress from this point.

It is recommend that you stand by, cool your jets, and post SpidermanPonies if you so wish to deflate everyone's anger.

Paging Knoeki, paging Knoeki.

Good night and over and out.
i dont develop on pouet nor do i intent to. for me thats not the point as well. i dont think once its out there it will magically turn into a 2013ish web 2.0 ajax site and a shazam-like android app to recognize demotunes and match them to the datatabase.

what i would gain from an open source pouet is the certainty that it wont vanish or be deprecated over time if the sole dev decides its time to for whatever reason (or its being decided for him).
so keeping it as open and on as many shoulders as possible seems like a good idea to me, indeed.
"it has worked until now so it will work until forever or until we decide the scene is dead" is not a motto i'd follow willingly.

i trust gargaj to do the job. he has proven hes up to it many times and again. but is that really what we want for the scene AND for him in the long run? personally id prefer him spending his time being creative instead, but thats probably just the uncreative lamer in me.
i think youre still covered in fear about others judging your code or -gasp- even try to make it better (which is of course very unlikely.. if at all they will fuck it up, right?).

"When I have some time". That's actually a very good point.
Maybe you should think about that before openly accusing people of not having finished their FREE WORK yet.

the sole dev

Can we put this myth to rest already? Someone else other than Gargaj already said they were working on 2.x with him, and Gargaj himself said he was open to people asking to help contribute, that I recall (I'm not going to dig for it). They just had to ask.

Unfortunately, too many people in this thread seem to ignore this fact. It's not just one person, and there's no reason why it would convert to being that.
Can we all quit adding fuel to the flames, and ignoring things already said? I'm with metoikos.

They don't need us, or this thread, to let them work it out together. We aren't part of the solution. We're the precipitate.

On with the pony images!
wysiwtf: I have enough confidence in my ability as a coder to not fear criticism or people judging my code :-) I'm not even ashamed of the bloody mess which is PM1 (with sources available since 2003 btw).

But what does that have to do with open sourcing anything? Why would you ever think that open sourcing the code will ensure the continued existence of that particular piece of software?

I think there's a general confusion about "open sourcing code", "putting it on github" and "turning it into a community project".

AMcBain: Sorry but this is just too much fun to ignore :-)

@D.Fox
Does PM2 fix the too-tall-screenshots floating problem? :P On the page where you view uploads and the rating pages, a screenshot/preview-image taller than the rest can prevent something on the next "row" from properly going all the way back to the left. It's definitely an issue with floats. I noticed it at Revision.
@D.Fox
ahahah, yeah ... I should have left well enough alone back at the "abandon thread" snail GIF. Or sooner, had I smarts.
what the FUCK. i'm away for a day and then there's this shit.

even old troll dickheads like stefan are coming back to life.

For 22 minutes, all was quiet. :(
OMG, what a SHIT STORM FROM HELL happened here? :(

Well too be honest, even if I'm the user #10 and know Analogue since ages, I find myself a bit strange his come back after 10 years of inactivity on the site :D

Also, I can understand (and regret) what happened here since 99.9% of the users never heard about Analogue, so it's a little bit difficult for them to handle the fact that an almost totally-unknown people want to rules the website they are using everydays.

About the "opensource" things i don't know if it's a good idea or not but if somebody make a complete and useable API for pouet, i will surely make a complete JS client à la Amiga (like chiptune.com) for it!

Ho, and it was written somewhere that I didn't wrote a line for the site (like: rez ---- 0%) but as far as I can remember I NEVER got access to the sources and never been admin, I'm just the jerk who gived the idea of the domain name to Analogue ;)

rez: you did the nfo viewer. afaicr you wrote a php script and passed it to me to include it in the site, you never had access. but that's why your name pops up on the changelog.

Seemed to me most people in this thread knew who analogue is. The problem isn't what he did, so much as his behavior upon returning.
and I should say, that of others as well. It is not one person's fault this thread is now 13 pages and no better off than page 1.
No one screamed "AAAAAaaamiiiigaaaaaa!!!111" yet? What a boring thread.

Additionally, I'd like to express my opinions of the current situation the pouet way: BB Image BB Image Gargaj, BB Image analogue

And sorry, I don't think opensourcing a website helps to improve it. I knew dozens of sites which run on open engines, yet they're still broken, unmaintained or simply a huge pile of mess. Much bigger than pouet is, and ever was. All it takes someone to sit down and fuckin' do the work. That's how things get done. The irony is, that's also how pouet was made back then in the first place...

So, since we have a man who's willing to sit down and do the work, I think the buzz is all over someone else doesn't like the idea of the particular man do the work, so he'd gave away the control to ANYONE and EVERYONE instead of the one man who's willing to sit down and do the work. Well, tough luck. Pouet was the MySpace of the scene. Maybe it's time for someone to invent the Facebook of the scene? ;)

I am seriously astonished by the sheer amount of people who believe that “publishing the source code” has exactly the same meaning as “giving root access to everybody and their dog.”
