For the masses ?
The xsens IMUs are really neat, but really expensive too. I'd say to get them only if you are doing sensitive work requiring lab-calibrated equipment, professional APIs working out-of-the-box, etc.
If you're just hacking around, perfectly good solutions exist such as the Razor IMU, the ArduIMU, and many more. So you'll have to get your hands a bit dirty in code, but there's a variety of drones, quadrotors, and robots in general using these.
