tadam!
Backed it. It's going to be a close call indeed!
elite imho. was nice in 1985 for technical reasons (really fast vectors...). but in 2012... do we really need a redo ?
well... nevertheless... if you send ME 1,4 bio bucks... i'll ... i'll... i'll... dance naked on the revision stage :-)
dude... 1,4 mio... !

i'll back it if it looks like it's anywhere near reaching its stretch goal. realistically the only computer i have that's powerful enough to play a modern game is the apple laptop i have from work.
or can you generally play these things in virtualbox? wine?

done. cheers for reminding me!
Already backed it!

@princetOM: don't underestimate what it takes to create a game of that scale. you need a few artists who create quality content, coders, audio designers/musicians/coders, lead game designers who know enough about organisation to make the thing happen at all, quality assurance team, business people, system administrators, rent office space, pay marketing, ... - and all those folks need to pay their rent. not to speak about licensing issues and blah blah.
today I watched the credits of far cry 3 and I thought "will it never end?"

PrincetOM: 1.4M is nothing for sandbox/open world games, considering the amount of work and data usually involved. The real budget of Elite will probably be much bigger in the end. Jco summed it up pretty much.
Jco: Indeed. A lot of studios helped our main studio (like Massive in Sweden for the multiplayer part) and we always include tons of remotely involved people worldwide. If a library was used, all the people working on that lib end up in the credits of the game and considering the number of middlewares/APIs/libraries used... ;)

jco: don't underestimate the number of people who want their name on the credits of a game even though they had only the most remote involvement in its development
The problem i see with E4, is that last time i checked (a few weeks ago), it was not clear if there will be any "offline" gamemode at all. The idea regarding community basically is that everyone plays inside the same economy (distributed by a frontier dev gameserver).... but unlike other MMOs, not every logged in player sees and interacts with every other player. Instead, there basically would be "groups" (kinda like IRC-channels).... so, you get to decide with which people you like to play.... so even though consequences to the economy are shared by all players, it regarding player-to-player interaction is as "massive" or as "unmassive" as you decide it to be.
Sounds great, but my issue with this is, that last i checked, braben has not yet clarified, if "singleplayer" is simply you playing online, but being in no group/channel.... or if there actually is a dedicated offline mode, that does not depend on frontier dev servers being up (or looking into the future, still being maintained - remember? The only reason nowadays people still can play elite 1/2/2.5 (FFE) is because it doesn't rely on a vendor server)

Yeah... but WOW! Elite!
Elite 4 finally!
I really can't wait to see how the planet surfaces are gonna look this time. Something like SpaceEngine I hope.

No offline gamemode? Not for me then.. Because of small kids my gaming style nowadays is 5 minutes of gaming -> 15 minutes of idling etc.
I want them to make it, and I backed it - but I have a nagging fear that what they want to make is EVE Online.
Needless to say, somebody already did.

In regards to the solo stuff, I got the opposite impression, that you could play just on your machine with the same procedurally generated content as the multi version would start with. I also noticed that they mention p2p as a way of keeping down lag, so hopefully they are planning to keep server use to a minimum.
125k to go now, come on!

and if you have a few bucks left, please support this game, too (urgent - only 25 hours left): Days of Dawn – A Fantasy RPG
@serpent:
Even if singleplayer would require an online conection to frontier dev, you still could spent i.e. just 5 minutes.
Think if it like this: To play, you need an online connection to the frontier dev server, to get the current state of economies of systems (which are affected by all players). However, you get to decide, with which players to interact via "groups"... and you can even go as low as "zero groups".... which would mean - even though your game universe reflects the overall actions of all other players (i.e. marketprices), you never directly encounter any other player.
The setup as braben described it can support this out of the box. So, there really is no question that you CAN go "singleplayer". What braben last i checked has not confirmed, if you can play at all without an online connection - so without you sharing the economy with all other players. If this were not possible, you still could play singleplayer - its just that (and this is my concern) that without internet connection and the frontier dev servers being up, you couldn't play at all (anyone remember xbox? Yeah, MS will NEVER shut the servers down... except of when it decided to do just that!)

At first I was like trc, then I was like plaf, but then I realised how much I liked and played the original Elite on my pirated copy on my atari st and figured the least I could do was to spend 20 quid on that...
I run linux 100% so I'm not sure this game will run, but for that nostalgic reason I just punched in...

Update! The above is the intended single player experience. However it will be possible to have a single player game without connecting to the galaxy server. You won't get the features of the evolving galaxy (although we will investigate minimising those differences) and you probably won't be able to sync between server and non-server (again we'll investigate).

Thank you for the heads-up mantratronic. This wasn't there about a week ago, so i guess braben finally clarified on that topic. If the statement ""it will be possible to have signle player without connecting to the galaxy server" is true without a "but" (ignoring that you OBVIOUSLY would not get updates of other players), i'm perfectly fine with that, and my argument is moot.
No worries, as xeNusion said braben isnt very good at marketing, this issue should have been better explained/updated.
Good to know there is a single player / offline mode now, donate!!!
oh fuck it, I'm upping my pledge to 32 euro =)
