Is there any point in making real-time demos?

category: general [glöplog]
i wonder where the hell all the lamers on pouet come from, i suggest you all start a new lamer scene that can write poems and silly posts on bbs's.

shane: your argument gets let down when you see that quite many sceners have talent that does compete with the rest of the world, and already are signed to record labels / work in cgi/animation for tv/film / work in videogames. yet still make demos.

maybe there are a lot outside the scene more talented than 95% of sceners. but then again, 95% of demos are crap, and nobody cares about them anyway. the 5% that are good would be good regardless.

pantaloon: the average pouet lamer doesn't even need skills to do his average pouet lamer poem, becaus he can use this awesome Poem Generator ;D

See This Discussion for details..

And by Rock bands, I don't mean commercial rock bands, I meant the sort of bands who do gigs in pubs, student bands, buskers, wedding singers etc who are undiscovered but still more talented than 95% of scene musicians.

What would be the point of them "invading" the scene? It's not like they can win anything big or something... (Let's put bigger events like ASM and TG aside)
And besides if they DO, don't they count as sceners from then?
(And the 95% is way off...)

I think man created god to be an image of the demoscene. Most demos originate from the begining of the 1950's, just after the big war. Then there was some sort of time-jump and then there was amigas on the fourth day.

What Im trying to say is that most demos are real-time. And thats pretty much all of it.

Animations take too long to download!

>People moan about pixel shaders and other
>people reply that it's all about using available
>technology blah blah.

Some arguments are just doomed to repeat all over, as people reinvent them. Get used to it.

>cos it's clear very few people give a frig about that

No it's not clear. You're oversimplifying like hell.

>sceners just want the end result.

Oversimplification.

>Another bonus is the scene wouldn't need coders,
>so they can go and join the washed up pixel artists,
>graphic illustrators, swappers and sysops in the scene
>retirement home (or Haujobb :).

I begin to sense some kind of coder hate at this point.

And about "underground musicians being more talented than 95% of the scene musicians"... again, unjistified oversimplification.

Look dude, here's my empirical principal component analysis of this thread:

1.) old (and good) arguments for realtime demos, repeated all over again, which seem to be skipped by shane
2.) provocative bullcrap from shane
3.) angered replies to shane's trolling (this post surely projects to this axis very well)

>Give me some good reasons against this idea because
>right now I don't see much point to realtime demos or
>intros at all!

Check point 1.) above.

I guess there exists an animation scene already.. check www.cgnetworks.com . They fit your tastes perfectly. They like stories instead of metaballs etc..

Doing animations is way too much work and way less fun than doing realtime stuff...

no need to do animations.. nothing tops cookieblues.mpg! :))

Stunning anims yeah, but they're by professionals and it's not really something sceners could be part of.

I'm thinking more along the lines of 100% Prophets stuff. Traditional demos, but with no need for coding or special hardware. Ironically, some realtime demos are actually bigger than an equivalent mpg or avi file.

I'm not anti-coders or anti-scene, but as I said before I'm playing devil's advocate.
Another point I wanted to make...

What is the purpose of using new technology?

To make coding easier? To make demos look nicer?

Pre-recording your demos will give you the best of both and you can still take credit for the innovation, style and production values.
*yawn*

... if you abandon high resolution, image quality and framerate.

Some realtime demos are actually bigger than an equivalent animated gif.

It'd be an impossibility for the scene to move to animations - it would no longer be the scene. A demo IS a real-time production, it's as simple as that. Anybody who really does only care about the end result is totally missing the point.

While the greatest demos stand up as art on their own merit, they mean more to a scener because they're created within the limitations of the scene - it's real-time, it's not filled with precalced effects, it's not huge, and it runs on a reasonably large number of systems.

let's have a category for animated gifs o_O

The internet is nothing more than enormous pre-rendered animation.
Actually, that should've been "an enormous"...

Dammit, my moment of deep insight has been marred by another moment of shallow haste.
and its probably an animation of shane's mom getting pooped on in a german porn video.

I guess for most coders (for me at least) coding realtime graphics is more stimulating and fun than coding animation renderers, so I think the whole point is stupid.

Though it might be interesting to try to build an animation renderer...
