Just to keep the flames ablaze, the dictionary definition of American is one who lives in the USA. The correct catch-all term for people living in North, Central, and South American is Pan-American. (Hence the Pan-American Games.)

shall we now indulge into, once again, a discussion regarding the fallacies of linguistic misscontextualization? we only had 7 of those on the past month, whats one more useless discussion amongst scene trolls with too much free time?

Both of my dictionaries disagree with your dictionary. I suggest we let them battle it out. My two against your one.

i checked oxford's and dictionary.com
but i guess dictionaries from overseas are bigger experts in english then the english ones.
how silly of us europeans to assume english dictionaries are more correct then american, pardon, pan-american ones.

My Longman says "especially technical connected with the continent of North and South America: a species found only in American rivers, especially in Brazil."
does that mean it will fight for ps, thom or just itself?

the first thing my swedish dictionary says about "amerikan" (american in swedish, duh) is that it's a person from north or south america.
i bet that most european languages have this deffenition, perhapes this is the answer!!! the american english meaning of "american" is another then the one in most (or all?) of the european languages???!?!?!?!???
but have and when did this happen? canadians (or atleast one of them) obviously also use the american model but what do the people in south america say?

from my personal dictionairy:
American.adj (don't say out loud)
a) someone who lives in the USA
b) the kind of people who thinks ruining others for their own fortune is quite ok
c) the kind of people who have no problem with collateral damage ("whatever that is, Gladys")
d) canadian
Note that I still regard some americans as very nice people and would never dream of holding my definitions against them.

If the Canadian people say they're not american, does that not make any dictionary definition that says otherwise wrong? Go back to China.
Very few germans ever admitted to be nazis, groove.
i thought the people living in the northern part of the southern part of middle america are to be call Jankees and the indians moved to india.
So anyway, BEFORE the Bush administration, folks in 'the states' got tons of shit from Canadians for excluding them from the term 'American.'
But, that's fine. We'll just call them all Newfies (:
Actually, that MIGHT not work, I was talking to a guy from British Columbia the other day who had never heard of Newfoundland.
