4k Crash/BEX Issues
category: code [glöplog]
Hi guys
So pretty much every crinkler and other packed 4k stopped working on my Core 2 Duo laptop and newly built i7 capture rig. Both running Win 7. C2D has a crappy Quadro NVS 160M, driver v285.62; i7 system has GTX 660 Ti driver v306.23.
Example error report:
Crinkler-packed intros crash with this exact the same report and values. Other various intros crash with a generic "APPCRASH" report. Unpacked intros run just fine.
Based on the BEX exception, I'm assuming this occurs when the unpacker jumps to the unpacked intro code. But I don't have a debugger set up to really see what's going on. I turned off DEP on both system's BIOS and in the OS, but it still occured; crinkler /recompress doesn't help either.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

I too have many crash with win7 fixed intros (crinkler 1.2 and 1.3). Only one seem to work well after recompress : Lunaquatic.
The issue seems to be an incompatibility with the Geforce R304 driver (from 304.48 to 306.97). The 301.42 is the last one who can properly run crinkler compressed intros.
However I've been testing on several machines with 306.97 (latest) today, without problems... Maybe it's related to all the phyxs/stereo crap I don't install...
I don't think that's it, I've been always installing physx and skipped stereo crap, it was the same when the intros still ran and now when they don't.
@ Gargaj etc, still occurs on my Quadro running driver version 285.62. Also 305.68 is the earlier driver for my 660 Ti, so can't try downgrading that one.
As for physx/etc, not installed here on the Quadro machine, and disabled on the 660.
The BEX in the crash message is apparently a DEP triggered exception indicating a buffer overflow. But it still occurs when I have DEP disabled so I have no idea if that's right.

305.68 is the earliest* rather, can't downgrade to 301.42 without issues, I imagine.
Psycho: Well that makes sense, doesn't it? What Gargaj quoted said "to", not "though".
Can not reproduce the crash for "rgba_kindernoiser_dialog.exe" - fixed.exe here. (Crinkler version 1.3 - Mar 5 2011)
Running 306.63 (Latest Beta Driver with OpenGL 4.3 support).
Win7 64 Bit, GTX 580. Everything running smooth here - and I installed all "that crap".

I just turned on DEP and I get the exact same error message - so are you really sure that you turned off DEP properly AND rebooted your system after that? I doubt that.
Ignore my two last posts. I screwed up - I didn't run the "fixed.exe" instead I did run the rgba_kindernoiser_dialog.exe which crashes with the above described error message - but it's compressed with crinkler 1.0 - so that has to crash win win7.
Are you really sure about that? Sure that you did run the coressponding "fixed.exe"?
fixed.exe runs here with DEP turned on.

Zoom: would you mind giving the 306.63 Driver a try? Just to rule out that it's not the NV Driver.
OpenGL 4.3 DevDriver

301.42 here, kindernoiser neither executables even open a window, so i think it's a bad example to test with in the first place.
zoom says http://www.archive.org/download/TrElevated/elevated_win7_test.zip crashes for him and works for me just fine, so it's probably a better testbed.

las: umm I already have the latest 306.97 - or is this the case where beta drivers have lower version numbers? :)
ok so you have to recompress - kindernoiser works here then.
Exactly. IIRC 306.97 does not have OGL 4.3 support yet.
elevated win7 test takes hell of a long precalc here - but works fine. With DEP on.
Ok, tried with 306.63, still crashes.
Also tried to recompress elevated_1920x1080.exe (from elevated_win7_test.zip) with latest crinkler, which interestingly got it down from 4073 to 4060 bytes, but that one crashes too.

zoom: but does it work for you with the 301.xx drivers?
I tried 285.62 now, and it works just fine with that. So it seems like it is indeed the driver.
I can try to narrow it down at which driver it stops to work if that helps anything.
64 or 32 bit? Thanks for trying 306.63 - strange - for me that driver works smooth. And the elevated test does not have to be recompressed.
64bit
64bit here too. Hmm maybe a hardware<->software issue of some strange kind.
Do you have a more verbose "crash message"? - see first post.

i upgraded to 306.63 and everything seems to work just fine still.
I'm on 306.63 as well (64 bit), and things are peachy.
