with so many parties you'd almost think america has a demoscene!
With this many parties and events, we'll hardly have enough active people or groups to attend them all! We'll have to import some European talent NVScene-style. ;) Well, *something*'s got to come out of all this, even if it's not quite the traditional demoscene most of us recognize.

Oh, and sorry for not keeping demoscene.us up to date on all these. Old and lazy scener is old, and lazy.

That's assuming the population of sceners is constant and not growing. : D

Trust me, I met plenty of people who were new to the scene at the last @party and I meet new interested people all the time.

More events is not just drawing on the same pool of people -- they are adding to it.

\o/ *secretly praying someone will organize a west coast party* :)

Ok, so this could sound harsh, but I do not mean it that way. So I'll insert a sense of the tone in square brackets.

[imagine me saying this in a casual "I have no horse in this race mostly" kinda voice]
I've been trying to get a crew together to do a west coast party for the past three or four months, via email, via FB. People are interested, but they all want "someone" to do it.

[and imagine this in a wry tone of voice]
I will refrain from imitating a certain particular scener with desperately sarcastic screenshots of the word "someone". (;

[honest voice]
I want to believe if I get hit by a bus and die, @party would go on.

Actually, that would be more likely than if I burned out crispy fried and quit the scene (temporarily or otherwise) to get my life in better shape. Pretty sad.

[amused voice]
Yeah, no need for martyrs, I'm sure folks are sick of hearing from 'em, and I don't remotely qualify unlike some people I could think of.

[honest voice]
Short version (with apologies to Richard O'Brien): Don't dream it, be it.

[amused voice]
Of course, you don't see me making the prods I've gabbled about. Lol.
Too busy making parties instead.

[honest voice]
I'm not saying this to make anyone feel guilty. I'm saying this to say: YOU CAN DO THIS TOO! I am just some random schmuck with more stubbornness and inability to drop it than is good for them.
Organizer fu is something I walked into, far as I know. I bet I could transfer at some measure of my knowledge in a few conversations, and I'm a comparative n00b (having cut my teeth on science fiction conventions and never as conchair).

[amused voice]
After that, it's up to your own insanity.
BarZoule>probably not this year, but one day avec plaisir

blackpawn: let's skype. I believe you have my email?
Hi guys! My name is Nick and I'm with MAGFest. In our 10 years of running MAGFest, this year is our first year hosting, a demoparty, so I'm thrilled it's listed here! We've got Chris Huelsbeck as a guest this year, so I expect awesome results.

Let me know if you guys have any questions about the event, and I'd be glad to answer it!
NickTheNewbie, That's awesome! Will he perform live? I'm actually working on a logo for Blockparty/MEGFest for a little prod.

Unfortunately we don't have any performances scheduled for him, but he will be doing at least two panel talks (including one with classic video game composer Yuzo Koshiro). You can expect to see him popping in and out of our demo lounge area, and he'll must likely help out judging the demo entries done over the weekend.
Excellent, thanks for the info Nick.

magic: considering the fact that nvidia didn't actually pay out their compo prize cash, it's super unlikely. I was in touch with the Guy On the Inside (Temis Nunez) and it was clear that management was all out of fucks to give about the demoscene.

This despite the INSANE level of participation, 17 entries in the Demo category, IIRC.

NVScene was a great accomplishment.

Like Blockparty, it laid the groundwork to encourage folks to make more demoparties in North America, whether there is ever another one or not.

No reason not to support existing parties (e.g. Demosplash coming up this weekend) or start one of your own.

I know there are folks out there who are intimidated at the idea of trying to run a party, or think there isn't an audience, but there is an audience, and with the right attitude and skills (and I'm still developing those skills, whether by doing or by talking to people who know what to do) anyone with a modicum of sense and passion can do it.

I am happy to share what I have learned and am continuing to learn in detail with anyone who is interested, and I know other organizers in North and South America who would be happy to do the same.

1) Whatnow? AFAIK, everything was paid out / mailed out correctly, and in a pretty speedy manner as well. If you know of incidents where this didn't happen, please send me an e-mail about it so that I can check up on it.

2) Judging the likelyhood of repetition based on speed of compo prize-payouts is pretty daft. Pretty much every demoparty in history would be judged as "super unlikely to repeat" by that qualification. :) And: see above.

This makes no sort of sense to me, since this is not even close to what my recollection of the event was -- and I _was_ on the inside for most of it. NVIDIA showed a very high degree of interest in the demoscene both before, during and after NVScene. If you read it otherwise, you either have a wildly colored view of it, shaped by misinformation, or everyone else involved with the organizing of the event are wrong. I don't hink it's the latter, to put it mildly. :)

thank you Gloom.
Gloom: do you know what is the interest of NVIDEA in the demoscene today? Do/Would they plan anything again? For example any outreach/lobby for this going on by the 'outreachteam' of 2008 ?
added on the 2012-10-09 18:10:18 by magic magic
While you're waiting for the next NVScene, Magic, you could attend one of the other parties over here, or send an entry. Or you could offer to help organize another NVScene.
