iq the magician :)
Watched the movie in the cinema. I liked what IQ did there (and spotted the name in the credits in the cinema - without knowing that IQ participated, but while watching those landscape things I had the feeling that I would spot his name in the credits and I did ;)).
I was kinda disappointed by those liquid ghost lights - I had the feeling those did not light up any surrounding "geometry" in a proper way, even if that could haven been faked quite easily. Had a hard time not to tell that anyone around me while watching.

So, realtime 4k at Revision?
iq you crazy fucker, even pixar wasnt challenging enough for you? :D
nice read. it's always cool to get an insight in the latest rendering/production techniques. seems like a great job iq the magician did there.
Well deserved praise, good job IQ!

Could someone please tell me the name of the technique they mention to extract shapes for rigging using jelly and armatures? I understand it's part of "Presto" but searching for that yields not what I'm looking for no matter filter refinement.

we’d place cubes where we wanted things to grow.
I knew it! ;)
Inertia: You're overcomplicating things. They actually build a physical model ... of physical jelly and with bones/joints :) No fancy hightech there :-D
Sort of explanation

I give up... :(
@Punqtured: Thanks for the paper, that sounds like a cool wysiwyg way to animate 5-legged creatures where you have no real-world example to imitate :)
I'll quote the passage for clarity, it's some other technique:

Some of the major changes affected the way in which the technical directors rigged characters. “In the past, we would weight and sculpt by hand,” Sheffler says. “Now we fill a new character full of a kind of jelly, put an armature inside, pose the armature via simulation, and use that to extract shapes for rigging. We can have a fully, nicely simulated, rigged character in a couple days."
The new system also automates the process of balancing blendshapes in faces and makes the process of rigging multiple characters easier. “You could think about a character as the sum of artistic opinions,” Sheffler says, explaining that a character’s rig file contains those artistic opinions, the decisions made as the rig evolves.
hey las, indeed, having the blue wisps lit the green environment was really difficult, mainly because "blue multiplied by green equals black". not easy!
Cool stuff. Now go make a 64kb intro about it. NOW... Otherwise people will be saying it's rendered and it could never run realtime, etc ;)
I'm just waiting for the extra material for Brave on DVD/Bluray were I expect some extra IQ magic :D
NEWS: iq/rgba renamed to "El Mago"
for real: really ace job there, gratz! ;)
(altho i guess it was easy for you, being a demoscener/-coder ;) )

because "blue multiplied by green equals black
why not sth like:
Code:
float MagicFormulaForBlueGlow(float4 color)
{
float distanceToLight=getLightDistance();
return smoothstep(0.0, furthestDistance, distanceToLight) * color.b * 0.5;
}
//in MAIN:
color[green].b += MagicFormulaForBlueGlow(color[whisp]);
return color[green];
this way green turns towards cyan. i know its not that easy after all, but why multiply if you can just add?
now i get it, you were joking ;) or am i ? who knows?! :)
lol, also i didnt think a second about my wrong smoothstep ;)
xernobyl, those images up there are realtime (about 40 fps). 20 kilobytes :)
Intro, or it didnt happen. ;)
Salinga, fair enough!
hArDy, sure indeed you can always leak luminance from one color channel to the others.

iq: If you do make an intro out of this, Gopher's latest synth, "64klang", which was first used in Uncovering Static would make for more EPIC.
And as others said. WOW! Fantastic(k) job you did for Brave. Hoping it will ripple in the scene and in other PIXAR productions.

So, if anything, it's more like an in-reach. ;)
