Not necessarily Pouet-specific, but is there any significance to <handle>/<group> vs. <handle>^<group>?
added on the 2016-05-10 22:40:25 by cxw cxw
Not really... Honestly my preferred way is <handle>/<group1>^<group2>^<group3>^...

i've always like that style as well, first / then ^

Thinking about it, <handle>^<group> might be an IRC thing where "/" is an invalid character in nicknames.

Not that I know of. There's one easy solution, though. Don't belong to any groups. ;) I tried and failed at that. I think three groups now have some kind of claim. (and I'm nowhere near the best programmer in the scene)
yeah, standard on infofiles and scrollers seems to be nick / group ^ anothergroup ^ thirdgroup

nick^group is more of an irc thing, most probably because the / was forbidden
some people used nickGROUP aswell on irc afaicr, i think nowdays no one gives a damn :D

EFNet's (where #scenesat resides) max nick length is too short. I can't use my full handle, let alone with group names. :( I have to lose a letter.

@cxw,

This formalized notation about group affiliations pre-dates IRC iirc therefore might very well be totally unrelated to any IRC constraints. As said by Gargaj, the symbol '^' differenciates between being a member of mono or "multi"-group. Main homegroup comes first after slash and mutli affils ares separated by '^'. Incidently the '^' symbol is also used to express a "logical AND" operation in computer theory as used in truth tables (see Logical conjunction), so maybe it can be read as a simple "and". First time I recall seing it used is within ASCII scene. It is thus rare and peculiar that a scener would present himself/herself as Membername^Singlegroupname and can be seen either as a noob mistake or just begging to differ.

Not really, some people still "give a damn" (I am one of them) but it is true social pressure to enforce this paradigm is far elss than years ago. To some it is still important to respect the demoscene/scene traditions, if only not to lose all specifity that differenciates demoscene movement to prevent ending up fitting Google's insipid "creative coding" or any other late demagogic BS.

Yes nowadays group belonging is not restrictful as per before iPhone era and millenials, but it still makes much sense to try to join one. In order to do that you need to erase asperities (such as not loudmouthing on selfish selfie embodying Twitter) and put some ego aside after understanding notably the collective reason to work towards a common goal and where that tradition comes from.

Even if it is not to be frowned upon and is respectful, being a gloper, yelling Amiga or making a new Arduino pcb and programming vanilla cube never made anybody a scener - it is more by showing you are respectful of some heritage and wish to pursue it.

Like loudmouthing was bad...
Whats wrong with loudmouthing together in a group or alone?

I know I exposed myself with this question to an attack but It is okay I expect that, so go ahead.
I never could and can't understand why "modern" working in a group always must be preceded with decency, low profiling, etc...

only if you join one of those little girls groups who get offended from everything..

It frustrates the hell out of me that people can even try to argue against decency.
The millenial mantra:
'bad is good, good is bad!'
'kindness is weakness'

No it isn't!

last time i looked, the majority of the scene aren't millennials, nor avid iPhone users either.

Groups are just labels, usually connected to a distinctive style if the same group of people worked on a few releases together. With modern technology it's quite easy to collaborate in new or multiple groups, it's also more fun to keep exploring different styles, different group dynamics and international friendships.

demoscene is just not interesting for millennials

but to their defense: obviously they didn't experience the dark information era the most of us did

how can you understand if you never _had to_ listen to the sound of 9.6kbit modem to barely visit astalavista, hornet, ftp.cdrom.com directories, read some usenet or chat on irc etc... but yeah, I also don't really understand some older things, like writing on stone tablet, papyrus, pergamin or whatever

so yeah, ascii and escape characters ftw

9.6kbit? D: Sound of 1200 baud with xmodem and mom picking up the phone after 10 hours of downloading from bbs, that's something!

You were lucky. We lived for three months in a brown paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six o'clock in the morning, clean the bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down mill for fourteen hours a day week in-week out. When we got home, our Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt!

Waiting 10 min.to download an app over edge connection on my supposed to be newest smart phone just to discover I have to update operating system to install it and I have used all of the bandwidth for my monthly plan...that's something! ;P

There are no precise dates for when the generation starts and ends; most researchers and commentators use birth years ranging from the early 1980s to around 2000.

Hey guys, take care, most of you are millenials too. Depending on some definition of Millenial.
