Why is 99.9% of the releases from Pilgrimage utter crap?

category: residue [glöplog]
There never was any denying that I'm an attention whore.

:-P

troll: not to mention that horrible mochunk tune.. gakk!

madenmann: finally, a sane argument! yeah, radman did a great job at whoring out the party, building expectations beyond what many figured would really happen. i remembered how crash '97 in calgary was touted as a party beyond belief, with no less than three invitation intros, a full-sized sports arena, and predictions of a 1000-person turnout.. only to have 50 people show up and move to a much smaller location. i dunno.. i guess we hope and dream a little bit more out here. expectations are not quite as solid as in europe. maybe he'll tone it down a bit next year, now that he has the experience.

(general audience):

let's face it, mocking the north american demoscene is like robbing a homeless man. it's pointless, it doesn't help us any, and it makes you look like an asshole.

The ARTS episode did not belong in that search though. That particular episode had very very little to do with Pilgrimage at all. It was more or less a history of what computer graphics effects originated from the University of Utah and a look at how computer graphics were done during the 1970s.

Which explains why it's the #1 most downloaded episode of The ARTS of all time, I guess?

...That or it's Spinsane getting insanely drunk during the interview.

One or the other! Take your pick!

And one other thing. I was hoping for about double the turnout that Rich was expecting. What can I say, he called it right on the number.

That just meant we had $14,500 in prizes and that much more booze to share with a smaller group of friends.

:-)

I thought Mochunk's tune was hillariously great. But then again I have a really twisted sense of humor.

I think the more WZ and demopaja demos the NORTH AMERICAN SCENE has at parties the better so that un named 12k demos don't have to compete against un named flash movies. What we really need to do is be careful how each entry competes and if it is in the right catagory. Pilgrimage had something right, which was the people who were at the party had a lot of fun. Fun breeds revisits and interest. I think that of all things the Pilgrimage organizers have busted their asses to raise interest in localities and I applaud them. Yes the posts onto Pouet are excessive, however the name calling and bitching about demos and whatever else is very unproductive. What are we? 12 years old? Constructive critism makes sense. Dry wit at the expense of a demo group, a party, or an individual is just plain bullying. It's not a bloody football game!
radman: haha, fine, I was venting. Here's the short version: everyone sucks.

Patrick Groove: Pouet is pretty immature, only 5 year old ;)

Well thats the message I, err uhh mochunk, SOME OF US IN U.S. have been trying to get across for the last year. Thankfully SiW put it in perfect perspective.

I'm sick of it all. Pouet is a huge pile of crap for it. At least it has an amazing database of productions which have been my portal to all the productions made in the last 4 years that I had missed while I stopped paying attention.

I was highly annoyed with all the party whoring and bickering. Almost embarrassing, but what can I do? I push it aside and went and had the best time I've had at a demo party yet.

hehe, mochunk... who else would be dumb enough to put guitar over sped up knucklebusters?

The party system sucked, but I'll save that rant for my party report.

So everyone, STFU. both middle fingers up to you...

same debate as:
why german ppl know how to do high-end cars where japanese/asians ppl are only able to copy them?

why french ppl are known to do a so wonderful cooking ?

<fill what you want>

maybe it's just about tradition, culture and values transfer from a "generation" to another...;)

Demoscene is something european, and more precisely something from Northern Europe. The roots are over there and neighboors were inspired too.

But I agree that Pilgrimage productions really suck. Let's give time to time.

all i know is, the scene (pc scene at least) was a lot more open in the past. especially 1996. in that year, there were parties in canada, singapore, brazil, israel, australia, and there was one in south africa around then too. were they dissed because of their relatively low quality releases? no. but hey, this was a time before pouet. i suppose there wasn't as much world exposure, but there was hornet and you could get the news and the files.

so now i have to ask myself, what happened to all the non-european parties? did they need more encouragement? or did they need less discouragement? sure, we can talk about the roots all we want, but calling the demoscene "european" is a bit arrogant, after all it was one of the most globally embraced hobbies in the world.. at one time.

Die Szene wurde einst von den Wikingern ins Leben gerufen.
(elend, http://www.pouet.net/topic.php?which=294)
"or did they need less discouragement?"

Bingo.

phoenix: if I say that germans are the best high end cars manufacturer in the world (Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche...), there is nothing arrogant. Just a reality due to a lot of circumstances which lead to this fact.

This is a fact that the core of demoscene is in northern europe (mainly scandinavia) due to a lot of circumstances which lead to this fact.
circumstances could be a huge advance in home computing/internet in these countries, the cocoon culture because of the damn weather leading to a massive use of your computer instead of being frozen as hell outside, and much more ;)

In fact, I still don't know why the core has ALWAYS been in scandinavia. look : The Party, The Assembly, The Gathering. They are (were for the 1st and 3rd!) the major demoparties in this world and located in scandinavia.

So, scandinavia is for demos like germany for cars.

maali, look. Optimus _is_ online again. And it looks like he can handle his pouet-consumption.
all: Please dont destroy everything.
A german gave us greeks the eurocup. Greek football is mediocre at best, disgusting at worst (between greek teams).

Oh, and most americans are assholes for bombing the world for oil and money, but them having demoparties is quite encouraging as a matter of fact. Keep up.

a fucking greek.

when i say "fucking greek" i don't want to call specifically any greek person a "fucking" person. no. out of frustration, i have to pinpoint someone or some country for taking us the cup. and that's all.

i know some greeks, and they are nice. so nothing against the greeks == people.

and i love cosme fulanito's comments.
