The state of the demoscene: 1991 - 2011

Painfully putting the finger on the pulse!
Wonderful!
*eyeroll*
ah yes. belongs right up there on despair.com or whatever it was.
A hapless fifteen year old does not a dead scene make, dammit.
NOW LET THE THREAD DIE ALREADY!

it's not the hapless fifteen-year-old that's the problem.
Going back to that scene.org redesign, I was clearing out some old stuff last night and came across some of the promotional stuff from the last redesign. Anyone else still have their scene wallet? Mine is still boxed and in perfect condition :)
thanks to this thread, i found a title (and subtitle) for my next production :)
rez: at least this thread has been good for something then!
Also, if the title is not "Manifesto - "Us" vs "them"" you have failed! :D

i don't think you've been paying attention. it has already been stated that noobs are undesirable. Outreach is about attracting professional people to our scene, people with at least 20 years coding experience and a Phd in mathematics. After all, that's the only way the scene will gain respect from the "outside world" and generate interest from companies and corporate affiliated organizations such as NVidia and SIGRAPH.

and? the scene isn't a place to create purly for the enjoyment of creating. we've got to get rid of such ideas. that BS doesn't fly in today's high powered demoscene business world!
aaaand welcome to today's edition of "let's pick something from something someone said, understand it in the most negative way possible, and trudge in it for a minute!"
Welcome to the internet.
touché :)
re: the 15yo noob. What's the problem there? sure he's been rudely correctly on the first reply, but all the rest if pretty casual and friendly.
re: rez. More prods! Awesome! you'll save the scene!! <choirs>ahhhh</choirs>
re: topic.
Anyone got any news about OJuice 2.0 ? It's been coming back for what, 5 years now ?
I think it was good to have a repo of every sceners (active and inactive) with their locations and specialties. So someone like mu6k, could browse the profiles and find that oh! there's 2 other sceners in romania, and one of them is a graphician. Then he contacts him and paf, a new group is born. Or if he's lazy he could just post a "Graphician wanted!" There were real job posts too, which made it a cool mix of pro and non-pro stuff.
That's pretty much how I officially got in the scene.

And +several thousand points for useful input at a low point in the thread to BarZoule!
oh, and just to clarify: that was not sarcastic, it was serious.
@BarZoule: That does sound great! Who do we have to poke to get OJuice 2.0 running? (and to spawn two sceners right next door to me?)
time to dig up the Romanian member of Youth Uprising.
D.Fox: exactly what I was talking about. A promising nujuice page that changes every now and then, but nothing more, just like this one. I hope the project is still going and guys behind will pull it off!
mu6k: don't hold your breath, it was just an example. You're not really looking for graphicians. :)

BarZoule: I wouldn't hold my breath. But you're right, the location features have been great indeed.
reed: there's no pleasing you Outreachers..even when i agree with what you say i get ninja'd. :@
Oh! I remember the nujuice talks. It was the idea to continue the very database of ojuice -as it was when it shut down, and go from there with a little spit and polish. This made sense given the timeframe. Nowadays the deprecated data of the ojuice database would make little sense to build from.
Also, any other "new" concept would be a very weak form of social networking that wouldn't take off anymore these days -not in the face of (ha ha) Facebook.

speaking of reincarnations - what's the status on new.pouet.net?
i know it's not done.
would it be an idea to put the scripts in public so others may join in on the development?

Someone should totally start Scenebook. It's Facebook...FOR THE SCENE.
button: you agree with what you want us to say, there's a difference :)
about nujuice etc: i've actually had some thoughts about a demoscene facebook app for a while now (along the lines of "why hasn't one been done yet?") - it'd be a relatively easy way to (re-)connect the scene, that is, provide means to look for sceners and scene events near you or in your country etc, look for sceners that you've lost contact with, etc. of course a) not everyone is on facebook, and b) not everyone on facebook will want to use the app :) i think it could work though. there are already several scene-related facebook groups with people willingly entering their name/handle/group/etc into a doc within the group; an app would be handier if done properly.
(btw, sagacity, incidentally there was once an amiga scene website called scenebook :) i just discovered it's still online: http://scenebook.planet-d.net/)

i dont really like the idea of connecting facebook/linkedin with pouet/slengpung/etc.
to be honest, what i need currently is the demozoo functionality and perhaps some layout changes here on pouet.net (i.e. if youtube is attached to prod - then embed player rather than showing screencap etc)
