What point are goths trying to make? They make themselves look ugly and unhealthy, yet they take so much time in their appearance. They can't be expressing individuality because 10000's of people look the same. They can't be interested in expressing a statement because people usually take no notice of anything goths have to say.
So please explain to me the purpose of the gothic image?

You don't always need to have a point to do something. Personally, I find goths very stylish, but discussing fashion on pouet sounds rather stupid...

It's just a way of identifying with people who might share similar interest, Okkie put it well enough. Most Goths I know (and I know many) couldn't care less what "outsiders" think of them. Besides, who could cliam that old Goth music like Siouxsie, The Sisters of Mercy, The Cure and the like don't kick ass, and that black clothers aren't cool? :)
Actually, black clothes aren't cool anymore. They used to be until goths rendered the whole concept plain silly. Even goths themselves realise this, and have resorted to wearing neon-colored extensions and accesories.

Wearing black isn't rock'n'roll. Wearing colorful clothes is.
Long hair isn't rock'n'roll. Big hair is.

if only people know how much variation there lies in goth .. and then, just add the scandinavian "synth" movement and you'll see my point. nowadays we mixed our style with indie, 50s, trance, jpop and godknowswhat to make it more interesting. the standard goth just doesnt have any taste, usually. (read: german goth :P)
