Also OpenMPT, which isn't crappy but I just can't stand it (sorry saga!). And MadTracker 2 too which I have a love/hate relationship with (mostly hate though).

I should have put OpenMPT too. I'm sure it's nice to use, but I can't tell because it crashes on me more often than a supercharged Lada in rush-hour Rome.

the "Yamaha TX16W" - "horrible to use" is a compliment for that thing.
My first guitar, a Squier Standard Stratocaster. Didn't stay in tune, horrible pickups, clunky neck ja if you even breathed towards the tremolo, it went completely out of tune. I gave it away. Ironically, after going through a variety of Fender instruments, my two main guitars now are a Squier Classic Vibe Telecaster and Stratocaster which suit me better than any Fender I've laid my hands on. But the first one was a complete piece of garbage.

That's where taste differs - for me it's the strongest point of the whole program (plus maybe the high compatibility with legacy trackers and supporting VST and such at the same time). For me, the Renoise / Milky / etc. GUIs are a pain in the ass. :) On the other hand, Impulse Tracker rules of course, and if I had to work with a "custom" GUI, it'd rather be an IT-like GUI than a Renoise-like GUI.

good hardware: i used to love my Roland JV1080 but it's very old now :)
bad hardware: the m-audio ultra usb sound card, bad build quality, will spend more on a digi design next time.
good software: AHX tracker on Amiga, i just love it :) Digibooster was ok aswell on Amiga, never liked octamed though.
bad software: sorry but i agree with rc55 on MPT's interface, its horrible, but i like the music that Saga produces with it :)

That said: of course it sold because it was cheap(er) than other alternatives, but the year of release is completely irrelevant (the Clavia NordLead was released at least a year before, and that RULED) and so is target audience: the target audience was exactly the same as the one for the Nordlead, the Virus, JP-8000 and such: people wanting "virtual analog trance-stuff".
Sure, the valid point of price is still there, but if we're talking about quality, price shouldn't be an issue, because in terms of value for money you get low value for a low amount of money. If you'd gotten the Nordlead instead you would have gotten high value for a high amount of money -- works out to the same.
as for the tracker interface discussion: I'm with Saga there. Why should trackers look like World of Warcraft anyway *g* cheers

Quite so: the exact phrase was Let's have your (extremely subjective) opinions / hatred / cautionary tales / warnings . Because subjective ranting is funnier, and we have the rest of the Internet for Objective Reviews. Besides, subjective rants by scene musicians are probably worth more than 'objective' analysis by BillyBob45 on Amazon in any case...

really bad SW: most of the scene tools made in the 80ies and 90ies. but we were good with numbers :)
bad HW: those PSS synths. and most of the consumer grade soundcards in the 90ies and 2ks.

The one and only piece of music I ever did with my Novation Nova synth.
I spent 90% of the time making ALL the sounds from scratch and 10% doing some test pattern :)

Btw, all synths sound come from the same synth playing all parts at same time. The Nova is an amazing machine :)

I once tried to make a recording with a Fostex MR-8 multitrack recorder. It was horrible.
