The $1 wage (which isn't that unusual at that job level) is supposed to reward performance, not just turning up and pushing some paper around. He was given some shares, if he does a good job the share price rises and he makes a ton of money. If he does badly the price goes down and he loses money.
So if he ended up rich, it's because of what he did there as CEO. When he went back to apple the company was facing bankruptcy, when he left it was the most valuable company in the world (in fact wasn't it worth more than microsoft and intel together?).
Why not take the same challenge yourself - swap your salary for some shares in your company :)

When I think about Steve and Apple (yeah friday night is the best time for this), the thing I respect the most by design with the current ecosystem is what I think of as the "gentle cattle herding" approach. The way in which users are coerced to comply with the intended use is pure genious. With its limited set of options, the system (transparently?) guides the average user to comply, in turn giving a feeling of "gain" on the overall experience. You are the "master" of this (limited) system, it does what you "want" (like push a button), which is why "it just works".
This is paired with design; the factual use of a narrowed down system is easier for a developer to anticipate (unintended usage scenarios can be excluded altogether as they're not possible), in turn enabling a perceivably "better" user experience. Simply, the cattle does not go elsewhere than along the fenced perimeter. But, if you start thinking that the (motherfucking) _real_ user experience should be about the system not getting in the way of your workflow, surely a "superior system" should be able to adapt rather than making you do so (despite how gently)?
Just to mention a hands-on example of my Apple user experience, I've always found the "iTunes chores" needed to get a music file playing on a iPod totally ridiculous. If I want to take a test rendering of a work-in-progress song with me, why does it have to be converted/added/tagged into my music library although I know I'm going to delete it sooner than later? Gapless playback detection, wtf? File format restrictions, why? I'd just like to play the file once or twice, ffs. Probably why I downgraded to a Rockbox-able iPod, even despite the new firmware does have its "open source" short-comings.
Returning to the Apple ecosystem.. I don't mind if someone wants to have it this way. I do not understand why other people make it an issue if someone wants it this way. Nor do I understand why some people who want to have it this way, are so obsessed with convincing everyone else about the perceived superiority..
..Oh wait! I used to be a Amiga enthusiast, thinking I was on a superior platform :D. Sure it might've been so, at least hardware-wise and for a very limited moment in time. Not that the perceived superiority really enabled me to do the things I wanted switftly nor even the way I _really_ wanted. Nonetheless best part is, I got over it \o/.
