Help with a netbook problem
category: offtopic [glöplog]
Would anyone know how I can fix a problem with windows vista booting up trying to configure updates that always get's stuck on process 3 of 3 at 0%? The computer I'm trying to fix is an HP Mini 1000. I don't have access to this computer. There is no Restore Computer option in the F8 menu to fix windows booting problems and there is no usb stick with windows on it to get to a recovery console. I've looked all over the place and cannot find a solution to this problem. So, I thought I'd ask here.
Same prob with me, 3 updates thatnever get handled. Wierd.
yeah and unable to get into a command prompt to
just wondering if there is some way to skip it or stop it from doing it and boot into windows. well maybe someone will have a solution for both of us.
i've seen that on server2008 before, there's some sort of xml you can edit/delete to get into the windows but i'd be damned if i remember...
yes, but unable to get into a recovery console or command prompt to do it. i do have those instructions written down. i just can't accomplish the task.
ah, look for C:\Windows\WinSxS\pending.xml
oh. hm. tried formatting up a USB key to boot from?
no and i do not have access to the computer. i am helping a female do this and it would be hard for her to do. because she only has the netbook.
also moving pending.xml won't work because there is no access to the command prompt. it just goes black.
So there's no safe mode in the F8 menu either?
there is. but that still goes back to configuring the updates and gets stuck on update 3 of 3 at 0%.
even Safe Mode with Command Prompt?
well we didn't try that. but i am assuming that does the same. she is so frustrated with it that she signed offline. so i will talk to her about that when she isn't mad anymore. but i'm wondering if there is just a way to skip or stop it from doing the updating.
if you go to command prompt it should skip the updates in theory and then you can kill the pending.xml - i can't help you with the moodswing though.
yeah but doesnt that try to boot up into windows?
then show the command prompt?
lol it's all good. she just needs some rest.
the problem with the command prompt to was that is was just going to a completely black screen. of all the things that could mess up the computer it had to be a microsoft update.
i'm not sure about her pressing F6 either for the hp restore option. Because, I don't want her to completely reset the computer to factory settings. Would you happen to know if there are other options in there that would help with fixing the problem? i've never owned an hp netbook before.
if the command prompt doesnt work then i recommend booting from a usb key - that's the best i can think of and nowadays there are pretty straightforward ways to do it
hmm ok if i cannot find another solution. i'll see if she can do that.
How about booting Ubuntu up from a stick and navigating to the corrupt stuff that way?

Don't be mean 8-bit ;-)
But srsly - if she could boot into a live distro, mount the drive, it would be a piece of piss to navigate to & then remove the offending xml file.
