Idea: Charts at pouet.net
category: general [glöplog]
Since World Charts is no longer released, I've thought about re-installing charts at Hugi. However, it was clear to me that just like any diskmag, we wouldn't get a lot of people to vote.
Then it suddenly popped up in my mind: Why does pouet.net not host charts? There are more than 6000 registered users - if many of them voted, these charts would be more representative than any scene charts in history.
People could fill in their votesheets when editing their profile. In order to simplify evaluation, people would not just write the names of the prods in their sheets like they do when voting for a diskmag's charts, but they would pick the prods from the pouet.net archive. (One way would be to let the voter write down the product ID.) If someone's favourite demo, intro, diskmag or group isn't featured at pouet.net, he will have to add it; thus, the pouet.net archive will become more complete.
The votesheets might be automatically evaluated by a script on a regular basis, e.g. once a week.
Since I'm not a member of the team responsible for pouet.net, these are only suggestions, and I have no idea whether it's possible to implement them.

..but pouet -does- host charts - it's just that they are based on rather dubious voting-data, and that you have to sort them yourself. :)
but yeah; i'm with you on that one - ps - wanna fix it? :)

I like this idea too! How about having it updating in realtime.
Maybe every user could fill out his fave demos/sceners in his account form. He can change it whenever he wants, which will affect the overall charts.
Well Pouet is scene central so it makes a lot of sense for it to have some kind of central scene charts.
At the least, the production chart should be decided according to the amount of thumbs.

Get ready for thousands of faked accounts (?).
And the WorldCharts may come back sooner than you know.

The fake accounts already exist :D
me likes...
as you can sort the popularity of the prods and show them at the right order i dont see a reason why anyone should install seperate charts here.
... btw. if it needs 6 months to upload some ordinary logos you can bet how long it would take to install a chart system

Have a tick box at every prod. every user has three or five ticks for each category. pouet sums up real-time ?
good suggestion, though sepearate categories should be added, f.ex. sound/music, code, gfx, design, overall feel, and such.
these choices would of course only appear if you are logged in.

Of course. We don't want the polish to win the charts :D
Frankly, I don't care much about charts. I rather like to see the popularity system ditched in favour of something that makes sense. Like, having a brief summary on the prod pages, displaying the number of first votes, the number (or percentage) of thumb up/ok/thumb downs.
erm, no.
Oh pleeeeeese!
you coward ps. :)
sounds good, something definately needs to be done about the chart system on pouet. having years old demos/intros sitting at the top with little chance of being knocked off seems a bit silly.
We could also rate our favorite users/coders/gfxmen/zakmen =)
charts idea is pointless, due to scene 'families' always will vote for themselves. personally, i do vote only for pain in hope it may help it being released.
and voting in internet is a perfect chance for all scene 'hax0rz' to shine. prepare for shane and optimus topping the charts.

Ah, something happened to the prod pages. Thanks, ps.
Now that I read adoks post again, I think I like the idea too. If not for charts, it could serve as taste/preferences info for each user.

Pie charts with a juicy filling, followed by a visit to the bar graph for a tall cold one.
sorry guys, but i don't get the point at all. there's the top 10 this and that pages already. keep it simple, keep it cool. if you want charts on top of that just go to http://pain.scene.org and do your duty. :)
besides, in pouet the problem of fake vote(r)s would be even more difficult to solve. that's what you get with the scene being so scattered these days.
well, if people want charts, diskmags sure aren't going to do it any more, that much is apparent (and sad, really :)
It's pretty damn sad when guys like Optimus, Bronix and me are more well known than some of the best demo makers in the scene.
I accept that I'm one of the lowest ranking sceners...or I would be if there were such a thing as scene ranking.
Come on, give the guys who really deserve it a fair chance to be honoured for all their great work and let their names be seen by all Pouet users!

Who wants charts anyway? If you have trouble finding out what's incredibly popular (but not necessarily incredibly good), you might need to consider whether you should follow the scene a bit more.
What about adding some metadata to the productions like who was involved in the prod and what they did in the prod (code, gfx, music, 3d etc) and then have a new ranking system based on code, graphics and music for each prod.
Based on this info individual people could be ranked based on their work on productions.
